Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. This video opens on Year 1, Day 221 with 57.8 science and Eureka2 waiting in the VAB. An uncrewed test flight swings past the Mun and comes home without its antenna. Then Jebediah Kerman flies two new scientists into orbit around the Mun to try out the eurekas. By the end the labs have sent home 233 science by radio and two new tech nodes are bought.
A delay and a test flight
Before anything flies, the commentary describes a new add-on: commands sent to an uncrewed craft arrive late, "so you have to like, I guess, plan ahead." A Delay readout now sits near the top of the flight screen. Eureka2 is loaded with nobody aboard. Since the last version, fuel tanks came off so it would "take off right away," struts went in, and landing legs were added that "aren't actually going to reach all the way down," in the hope that they keep it from rolling.
This time it lifts off at once. "Look at that." It climbs straight up until the outer engines are spent, so the dropped stages cannot swing into it, and only then turns over. There is fuel to spare in orbit, so a maneuver node sets up an encounter with the Mun, and the empty craft flies past it. The delay turns out small: "I guess it's actually point one second delay." Opening the service bay near the Mun gives "a tiny bit" of data, which is kept.
No antenna on the way down
A short burn sets up the trip home. The empty engines are dropped while pointing prograde, then the craft turns retrograde and drops into the atmosphere with its antenna still out. "Okay, I think my antenna just broke off. Yep, it's broken." Without it, the commentary is not sure the craft can be steered at all.
The parachutes still open. It comes down at night on a slope and falls onto its side, and nothing breaks. The verdict on the new legs: "we learned their landing legs don't help us at all."
Two scientists for the Mun
A second empty Eureka2 tries the gravity turn earlier, from 10,000 meters, and drops the outer engines once the markers line up. "Okay, perfect." Then the real crew goes in. The crew window shows Jebediah Kerman as pilot with Ludlie Kerman and Leatrey Kerman, both scientists, in the Mk1-3 Command Pod, while Bill and Valentina stay home.
The early turn works: "I think this is more efficient the way I'm doing this." From Kerbin orbit a burn sends Eureka2 to the Mun. The big tanks run low, the last burn uses the weaker center engine, and the craft settles in. "We're now in orbit of the moon."
Fifty eurekas
The two scientists move into the two labs, the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 and the TH-NKR Research Lab. A crew report, a temperature reading, a materials study, the goo canister and a barometer reading all go into the processing lab as data, and research starts. In the other lab a Plant Growth experiment begins at 0 of 50 Eurekas, which the commentary calls "its own little science related currency."
Time warp follows, and about five days later the Eurekas are full.
The plant result would be worth about a hundred science "if we bring it back." The experiment is cleaned and run a second time, and that result stays aboard because the lab already has the data. With both scientists in the processing lab, its rate goes from about 3.5 to 7.0 science a day.
207 science by radio
Once the lab holds just over 200 science, it all goes home by antenna, and the battery holds up through the transfer.
An EVA report over the Mun goes out the same way. Back at Kerbin, SolarBat1 has been working through all that time warp too, and Bob Kerman's lab sends 26 more. "Good job Bob."
Where it ends
At the Space Center it is Year 1, Day 262, with 329.9 science. In the tech tree, Heavier Rocketry and its RE-M3 "Mainsail" Liquid Fuel Engine go first for 160, then Advanced Electrics for another 160, leaving 9.9. The next wants are the bigger solar panels and the parts for attaching modules, and maybe docking after that.
The video ends in the tech tree. Eureka2 is still in orbit around the Mun with Jebediah, Ludlie and Leatrey aboard and its lab researching, SolarBat1 is still in orbit around Kerbin with Bob, and no kerbal has been lost.
