Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. After the first successful docking, this video is a homecoming. SolarBat1, DockingWho4 and Eureka2 all bring their crews down to Kerbin, the science total climbs past 279, and the rest of the video goes into the first piece of a space station, BSSScience1, which is still in the Vehicle Assembly Building when the video ends.
Bob Kerman comes home
The plan is set right away: "I think first we're gonna bring everybody back." SolarBat1 has been circling Kerbin for 369 days of mission time with Bob Kerman aboard. Its lab has little data left, so the last of its science is transmitted.
The part that comes back sits at the top, and Bob can't get there from inside. So Bob goes out on EVA and climbs a ladder up the side, slowly, "just in case," and boards. A burn drops the orbit into the atmosphere, and the old stages are left behind.
The capsule comes through the heat and the parachutes open. "When this parachute's deployed, it actually dropped my speedup time." The recovery earns 7.8 science, mostly from a materials study and a Mystery Goo observation.
DockingWho4 splashes down
The Tracking Station still has the two ships from the docking flight, DockingWho4 and DockingWho5. DockingWho5 has no crew, so it is pointed retrograde and left to fall: "So that will get rid of itself."
DockingWho4 carries the two pilots, Ludwell Kerman and Lodlorf Kerman. It burns retrograde, drops its engine section and heads in under its heat shield, aimed at the sea.
It lands in the water. Lodlorf climbs out for an EVA report and a surface sample, and the recovery adds 2.2 science, bringing the total to 58.
Eureka2 leaves the Mun
Eureka2 is still orbiting the Mun with Jebediah, Ludlie and Leatrey Kerman aboard. Its Mobile Processing Lab gets a little more time to work, climbing to 90.579 science, and then it all goes home by transmitter.
Ludlie moves across into the command pod, and the Life Support Status window shows all three kerbals with supplies to spare. A maneuver node sets up the trip home, the burn goes off on the countdown, and Eureka2 is on its way. "Goodbye Mun."
The landing legs glow on the way in, and the whole craft comes down on a big cluster of parachutes over a desert. It touches down on a slope, loses a leg and ends up on its side. "We lost a leg, but that's okay, we're fine."
The desert is a new place for science, so the crew takes a crew report, an EVA report and a surface sample, watches the goo and logs the pressure and temperature. The big prize is already aboard, though: a Plant Growth experiment from high over the Mun, worth 100 science on recovery. Once Eureka2 is recovered, the R&D building shows 279.9 science on Year 2, Day 60.
A station takes shape
The tech tree has a docking port that attaches from the side. The Inline Clamp-O-Tron, "a sideways pointing docking port," costs 300 science, which is just out of reach. "I'm short on science of course."
So the work moves to the VAB and a new craft, the Basket Space Station, Science 1, saved as BSSScience1. Its command pod gets parachutes so it can come home on its own if it ever needs to, and a docking port on top for whatever comes later. A Connected Living Space window shows which parts kerbals can walk through.
To check that, the half-built craft goes out to the launch pad with Lodlorf Kerman inside, for a test that never leaves the ground. Lodlorf climbs out the right door, crosses from one ladder to the next and gets back in. "That seems like it works."
Back in the VAB the stack keeps growing. A particle accelerator goes on, then service bays packed with experiments, RCS tanks and thrusters, life support supplies, solar panels, fuel tanks with a small engine, a robot core so the station can fly without a crew, and antennas. "It looks cool with all the things."
Where it ends
The video ends in the VAB with BSSScience1 still on the build floor, not launched. "We're out of space, we're out of time." Next time it needs rockets big enough to carry it up without falling over, or it gets split into parts that dock together in orbit. All of the crews are home, every kerbal is still alive, and DockingWho1, DockingWho2 and the two DockingWho3 rockets are still in orbit around Kerbin, and Science7Robot and Science8Robot are still out at Kerbin and the Mun.
