Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. The save opens on Year 2, Day 82 with 469.5 science and BSSHub1, the station's docking hub, back in the Vehicle Assembly Building. This time it gets fins and a pilot, Lodlorf Kerman, and it flies up to meet BSSScience1 for the first docking between two pieces of the station. The two ships get close many times. They never connect, and the video ends with them drifting apart in orbit with Lodlorf aboard a hub that has no parachutes.
Fins, then a pilot
The commentary sums up the last try: the hub went up without fins, "and then once we tried to tilt it just spun." Now it has fins, and the first flight goes up empty to test them. It climbs off the pad at night, banks into the turn and stays together, and the map soon shows its apoapsis over 109 kilometers. "So I guess the conclusion is that this is working okay." Back at the Space Center, the test flight is left behind: "that will crash, we don't need to worry about that one."
In the VAB the hub gets a crew this time. Lodlorf Kerman goes into the Mk1 Command Pod on top, and Ludwell Kerman stays on the ground. There is a catch, and the commentary says it twice: "There's no parachutes in this thing, so it has to dock."
Catching BSSScience1
The second launch is also at night, and "it's pretty stable now that we had fins." It has fuel to spare: "we apparently have way more fuel than we need." Once in orbit, BSSScience1 becomes the target. The two orbits are tilted against each other, so a first maneuver fixes the angle, and a second sets up a meeting. After some nudging the map shows the two passing 0.3 kilometers apart, and the commentary is pleased with that: "I feel like that's pretty darn good."
Then comes a long wait in time warp. The plan is to burn retrograde once close, to kill the speed between the two ships. A new readout in the corner suggests a short burn, and that gets followed too. "Okay, so now our relative speed to the dude is really low, and he's right here."
The hub still has its boosters on, and they are in the way, so they get dumped before going any closer.
Two ships, one at a time
Docking needs both ships pointed at each other. A trip through the Tracking Station switches control to BSSScience1, where one of the hub's docking ports is set as the target and the ship is told to point at it. The station's solar panels are a worry too, in case they bump the hub.
That is where it starts to go wrong. Whichever ship is not being flown stops turning toward its target, so the two never stay lined up. "I swear that last time I did this I was able to have the other ship also do RCS to work on docking, but that doesn't seem like it's happening with this." A docking alignment display shows up on screen, and some mods help with docking, but "there's also like a docking interface thing, but I don't really understand what this even is." The hub's ports are also on its sides. "Last time I docked, they were on the ends of the ship."
For more than twenty minutes it goes back and forth between the two ships, slowing down, pointing at the target and creeping closer. "This is really stressful."
Out of monopropellant
About 48 minutes in, BSSScience1 stops moving. Its resources panel shows why: Monopropellant 0.00 out of 1530. "Oh, you actually are out of propellant." From here only the hub can do the work. Burning retrograde does not shrink the gap the way it should, and soon it is "the ramming stage of this process." "No, that was worse, just in case you're wondering." The alignment display switches to "Target Out of Range."
Where it ends
"So I think we might actually have our first death," the commentary says. "I mean, he'll survive out here for a while." The Life Support Status window lists BSSHub1 orbiting Kerbin with Lodlorf Kerman, and BSSScience1 orbiting with Jebediah, Valentina, Bill, Leatrey, Bob and Ludlie Kerman. Nobody dies on screen.
The video stops with control on BSSHub1, the docking display still reading "Target Out of Range" and the two ships moving apart at about 132 meters per second. The commentary wraps up for the day. The station is not docked, BSSScience1 has no monopropellant left, and how Lodlorf gets home is left for next time.
