Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. This video picks up right where the last one stopped, with DockingWho5 and Ludwell Kerman about 36 meters from BSSHub1. This time the two craft dock. Lodlorf Kerman then spacewalks from the hub across to DockingWho5, the joined ship turns out to be hard to fly, and Basket builds a new craft, BSSAdapter1, to carry RCS fuel. The video ends with BSSAdapter1 on the launchpad with a new pilot, Philford Kerman, aboard.
Docked at last
"We're gonna try and dock today." The docking display is still open on the left, and the routine is the same as last time: point DockingWho5 at the target, switch to the hub with the square bracket keys, point that one at the target too, and nudge closer. Small drifts keep spoiling the line-up. Finding retrograde close up turns into a hunt ("Is there even a retrograde marker somewhere?"), and turning RCS on tends to throw the alignment off again.
The commentary works through it slowly, matching the crosshairs on the display and killing the sideways speed a fraction at a time. "Fourteen meters away." Then ten. Then, at about 37 minutes in, the distance drops below half a meter and the ports catch. "Oh, look at this." The target readout clears, and DockingWho5 hangs off the side of the hub. "So, success. So now this guy is safe."
A ship that won't fly straight
The next job is a short burn to bring the joined ship toward BSSScience1, which is still out of monopropellant. It goes wrong right away, and the whole stack starts to tumble. "Did this engine fire or what?" One engine gets shut down and the burn is tried again, but the ship still swings around. "I feel like I'm in the movie Gravity, where everything is going crazy."
Moving crew inside the ship fails too. The game refuses the transfer between the hub's Mk1 Command Pod and DockingWho5, and the reason turns out to be a separator in the way. "If there's a separator you can't go through it. Now you know."
Lodlorf Kerman's spacewalk
So it has to be done by hand. Lodlorf Kerman climbs out of the hub's command pod and floats across on the jetpack, with a pause to look up the EVA controls and plenty of up, down and too-much along the way. It works. "We've gotten them over there."
A short test burn afterward points at the shape of the joined ship. "I didn't anticipate that when you have a weird shaped ship that when you're in space it still doesn't work right." An empty part is decoupled and drifts off, and the Life Support Status window now lists Lodlorf Kerman and Ludwell Kerman together aboard BSSHub1 Ship, with six kerbals still on BSSScience1: Jebediah, Valentina, Bill, Leatrey, Bob and Ludlie.
Building BSSAdapter1
The new plan needs a go-between. BSSScience1 can't steer without monopropellant, and a look through the tank menus on the docked ship doesn't turn up a way to pump fuel from one craft to another. So the idea is an adapter ship: a docking port at each end, a crew section in the middle that kerbals can pass through, and RCS tanks on the outside. In the commentary's words, its job is to carry monopropellant, dock with BSSScience1, and then connect up to the hub.
The VAB session runs for most of 20 minutes. Docking ports go on both ends, then parachutes, RCS tanks, fuel lines and struts, and finally a cluster of booster stacks around the base. A flexible docking port gets a read too.
Two test flights
The first flight goes up unmanned. "So this is way overkill." The commentary counts twelve engines burning at once, but the climb turns wobbly, and the cause is found back in the VAB: some fuel lines "did not mirror," so tanks ran dry at different times. With those fixed, the second launch goes better. "So this made it into space. I'm satisfied enough."
One more question is whether RCS works with nobody aboard. A try on the launchpad gets recovered, and the check moves to the test craft already in flight instead, where the thrusters do respond. "Okay, so you can use RCS."
Where it ends
Back at the Space Center it is Year 2, Day 84, still with 469.5 science. A new pilot, Philford Kerman, is hired at the Astronaut Complex and loaded into BSSAdapter1, and a crew transfer down through the ship is tested on the pad. "So that worked, good." The video stops with BSSAdapter1 sitting on the launchpad, not yet launched. "So I guess tomorrow this is where we will pick up." Up in orbit, Lodlorf Kerman and Ludwell Kerman are together on the docked hub, and BSSScience1 is still waiting for fuel.
