Air Conditioner, Episode 5: Oxygen Not Included Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 5 of Season 1 is a stream that opens on Cycle 14, just after Episode 4 stopped on Cycle 13, with seven duplicants. The farm has been running hot, and this video is about cooling it: a room, gas pipes, pumps and a Thermo Regulator. Along the way the refrigerator fills, a Cooking Station goes up and the power runs short. It ends on Cycle 18 with the air system still waiting on pipes.

Plans for air conditioning

A new research is picked. "We want to cool off those plants." The plan is "basically air conditioning," with a room of its own "because it's going to produce a lot of heat in that room." Plants are uprooted to make space, and a floor and a door are marked out. Gas pipes and vents follow, though the commentary admits, "I'm not an expert on how this all works." The pump ends up outside the hot room. The Research Station card soon reads Temperature Modulation.

A bed out of reach

Gossmann is found asleep in a pocket the oxygen overlay shows full of carbon dioxide, with a card reading Bed beyond reach. "This door needs to be done and this bed needs to be made." The airlock and a cot are still waiting on materials, and Gossmann pulls through.

A storage bin is set aside for rotten food, away from the rest "because it stinks." Then the refrigerator fills up with Muckroot and Meal Lice. "These things actually require to be refrigerated as well."

Stress and algae

Ren is "super stressed." A Massage Table goes in, with a Breaktime Policy of minimum and maximum stress, and the duplicants are meant to use it automatically at the breaking point. Ren does not. Then the algae runs out, "which is what we use to breathe," and a wall of algae is dug out to refill the machines.

The Thermo Regulator

Temperature Modulation finishes, and the Utilities menu now shows a Hydrofan, a Thermo Regulator, a Space Heater and a Liquid Tepidizer. The Thermo Regulator goes between the pipes, input on one side and output on the other. The pump then reads Pipe Blocked, so a second pump is added to circulate the air.

Kitchen and power

New food buildings get finished. The Microbe Musher is set to make Liceloaf, "the same amount of calories as the mush bar," and the Cooking Station offers Mush Fry, Gristle Berry, Pickled Meal and BBQ. Mush Fry removes the disease potential from mush bars.

The alert list now reads Circuit Overloaded, and the commentary decides the colony is drawing more power than the wheels make. Power Regulation is picked on the research screen, more Manual Generators are placed, and a pump is disabled while its pipes are still unfinished.

Where it ends

On Cycle 18 the temperature overlay goes over the farm, and a Mealwood card reads Ideal Air Pressure. "These are growing better now maybe?" The video ends there.
