Water Tank, Episode 7: Oxygen Not Included Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 7 of Season 1 is a stream that opens on Cycle 23 with nine duplicants and the gas pump switched off. This video is about water: a pump at the bottom of the base, a pipe running up the side, and a pit dug out to hold it all, the tank in the title. On the way a tenth duplicant joins, a group gets stranded in carbon dioxide, and Filtration research finishes. It ends on Cycle 26 with the tank dug but not finished.

Pump and pipe

The gas pump's card reads Building Disabled, but the commentary thinks the air vents are doing their job: "this is sort of hotter here but then by this vent it's actually cooler," and the crops "are a little happier now." Food is still decaying, so a storage box comes out to make room for a refrigerator.

Liquid Piping is done, and a Liquid Pump goes in at the bottom of the base, where the water sits. "I'm trying to make a lower spot where the water will collect, and then we have to run power to it." A Liquid Pipe runs from it all the way up the side of the base, kept clear of the air ducts, to be tapped later for showers.

A new scientist, and a trap

The DNA Blueprint screen offers Mi-Ma, a Level 8 Scientist, Nails, a Level 7 Body Builder, and Leira, a Level 7 Artist. "I guess we'll do scientist, that might help with researching." That makes ten. During the stream two duplicants get new names, and the newcomer is set up on the Jobs screen as a researcher.

Digging the low spot for the water opens into a part of the cave full of carbon dioxide. The game is paused: "These people are now stranded." The oxygen overlay shows the dig in red, with a pocket of breathable air close by. The digs toward it get priority 9, along with a floor the duplicants can stand on.

The game's oxygen overlay on Cycle 24, most of the cave shaded red for unbreathable gas with a patch of blue, an Oxygen Overlay legend from High Concentration to Unbreathable, a hover card reading Oxygen, Breathable Gas, 965.4 g, Sufficient Concentration, and a duplicant standing on a ledge at the right

Gossmann ends up boxed in. On the Jobs screen, building is switched on for Gossmann in the hope of a ladder out, and the ladder goes up: "Oh yes! Okay, that's great." An alert reads Made a mess, which the commentary blames on a duplicant in "our water supply." Nobody dies, and ladders go in along the edges so it does not happen again.

Filtration and a geyser

On the research screen the commentary weighs a way to scrub carbon dioxide and a way to turn slime into algae, then settles on filters. "I want to try and filter out some of this stuff." Filtration is picked, with a Liquid Filter among its buildings.

The game's research screen with Liquid Piping complete at 20/20 and Filtration outlined in orange, a hover note reading Liquid Filter, Sieves the selected Liquid out of a liquid mixture, sending it into a separate Pipe, and boxes for Pressure Management, Sanitation, Medbay and Percolation

Natural gas turns up in the base, and a new pocket holds a Steam Geyser, venting. "It seems dangerous but also cool."

Digging the tank

The pipe looks full, but "that's not water that's pumping through, that's the air." Meanwhile the digging goes on. A stepped pit is dug out under the pool, and its bottom is walled "to make sure the water stays in there." Plants in the way are harvested and uprooted.

A long pool of blue water along a cave floor on Cycle 25, a stepped pit dug out below it with rows of dig markers, a ladder running down into the water, the game's resource list at the right and a hover card reading Sandstone, Raw Mineral, 952.0 Kg

Algae and stress

Filtration finishes. The Refinement menu now has a Water Purifier and a Bio Distiller, which turns slime into algae and gives off polluted water. A tank for polluted water would come first, unless it can go straight into the purifier: "I do have quite a bit of sand, actually."

The Refinement build menu with Water Purifier, Bio Distiller, Compost and Fertilizer Maker over the grayed-out base, and a Bio Distiller card reading Converts Slime into Algae, with requirements of Slime, Power and a Liquid Output Pipe and effects of Algae, Polluted Water, Heat and Decor

Alerts read Bed beyond reach, so more beds go in. Stress is high too, and the Massage Table sits unused: "They don't seem to care." Interior Decor is next on the research screen.

Where it ends

On Cycle 26 more plants are uprooted to clear space for a floor. The tank down below will come "at some point," and the video ends there.
