Shower Room, Episode 10: Oxygen Not Included Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 10 of Season 1 is a stream that opens on Cycle 33, where the last video stopped, with eleven duplicants and Sanitation research done. This video builds a new bathroom: three showers fed by a water purifier of their own, the shower room of the title. It also starts a two-floor room meant to make oxygen and burn the hydrogen for power, and two more duplicants join. It ends on Cycle 36 with the showers standing and most of the new machines still waiting on materials.

Research and a Puft

The stream opens on the research screen. Performance Combustion is picked, with a Hydrogen Generator among its buildings: "when I start producing oxygen from water I'm gonna need to burn off the hydrogen."

A viewer suggests a creature that eats dirty air, and there is one in a nearby pocket of polluted oxygen, labeled Puft. "I was afraid of him. He looked kind of scary." The slime around it gets marked for digging: "I want the slime."

A dark cave pocket of greenish gas with a hover card reading Puft, Consuming Polluted Oxygen: 0 Kg/s, above an Oxygen card reading Breathable Gas, 126.5 g, Low Concentration, 29.6 °C, and the Research Station's Select Research box at the right

A bathroom that's not so stinky

Water is slowly building up, and a Steam Geyser's card reads Rising pressure. The old outhouse stays, but the plan is "a new bathroom that's not so stinky and I'll just stop using that one." Three Showers go in, with clean water in and dirty water out. A second Water Purifier gets a small room beside them, and its clean water runs straight back to the showers: "I have actually seen showers in a closed-loop system."

The game's liquid plumbing overlay with three shower outlines on an upper floor and white liquid pipes running down from them, a Build Tool card reading Sandstone: 59773.6 Kg / 100 Kg, and the Plumbing build menu with Outhouse, Lavatory, Shower, Liquid Pipe and Liquid Pipe Bridge at the bottom left

Nisbet's card at this point lists Frustrated, Dirty Hands, Grimy and Light Wounds. Later two Lavatories, "the newer, fancier bathrooms," are placed next to the showers.

An oxygen room

An alert now reads Insufficient oxygen generation. The idea is a room "where that all takes place": Electrolyzers on the bottom floor, gas pumps between the floors, a roof on top. "I'm kind of making this up as I go." Research Complete ticks to 12, "oh so hydrogen power, good," but the room would pull a lot of water out of the system, so it waits.

The game's power grid overlay with white wires across the base, and a Hydrogen Generator build card reading A Power source that converts Hydrogen into electricity, requirements Hydrogen -100 g/s and Gas Intake Pipe, effects Power +800 W, Heat +20 W and Decor -15, and the line Hey, wait... this thing doesn't generate hydrogen at all!

When it comes back, a Gas Filter is set to pull the hydrogen out for a Hydrogen Generator, and the oxygen from three sources is piped out to different points across the base. "I'm not really sure if it's going to work overall, but we'll see."

Two new duplicants

The DNA Blueprint screen offers Ellie, Nails and Stinky. "So, a medical person." Nails, a Level 5 Body Builder with +4 Medicine, is printed, Scaredy-Cat trait and all. The algae runs out, and the patch marked for digging reads Unreachable. Later Travaldo, a Level 8 Runner, makes thirteen: "can't cook but that's fine."

Where it ends

On Cycle 36 the showers stand in a row, but the new Water Purifier reads No Wire Connected and is waiting for Filtration Medium. The Hydrogen Generator waits for copper ore, and the Fertilizer Maker reads Building Disabled. A Hatch is eating dirt, "giving me coal, which is kinda nice," and the video ends there.
