Episode 6 of Season 3 is a stream that loads the BasketCase3 colony at Cycle 53, right after Episode 5's natural gas generators, with a "Food shortage" alert already showing. That alert never goes away. The stream tries more cooks, new farms and a rebuilt water system, loses three duplicants in a dig, and then watches germs and hunger spread. By the end it is Cycle 65, seventeen duplicants are alive, and the commentary decides to stop there.
Cleaning up the gas room
A new duplicant is printed first, then the commentary looks over last episode's natural gas room. The generators are not burning as much gas as is coming in, one sits idle, and the room is filling with carbon dioxide and polluted water. A Carbon Skimmer goes in to pull the carbon dioxide from the air, an airlock door is set to stay open so the gas can drop into the room below, and a liquid pump goes in to lift the polluted water out. The verdict on the setup: "it's really not a good idea."
More cooks, new farms
Attention turns to food. The cooking stations are short on ingredients, so more duplicants are allowed to cook, and one is set to do nothing but cook. The farm is too warm for its plants, and the chlorine some of them need has drifted away.
Research had nothing selected, so it goes to Pressure Management, on a path the commentary hopes leads to a way to "cool off this area." There is also something new to try: hydroponic farms, tiles that grow one plant each and are watered through pipes. Five go in, planted with Blossom Seed. One is unhappy because "it's not bright enough," and the colony has not researched lights yet.
Trapped in the dig
Next comes a new space for more power buildings, with ladders run across an open cave. Some duplicants get stuck partway. "You're trapped... Don't die." A "Suffocating" alert comes up, and it is too late: the game reports three duplicants dead, Camille and Stinky both "Dead: Suffocation," and the commentary names Ren as the third. "Poor choices. I didn't have that part dug out." Graves are built, and Stinky is carried to one.
Out of water, out of food
The water runs low next, because so much of it is being turned into oxygen. That turns out to be the food problem too: the kitchen needs water, and the Microbe Musher reports "Insufficient Resources." The polluted tank is close to full, so more machines go in to turn polluted water back into clean water, with new pipes and bridges to feed them. When the pipes jam, removing one section clears the bottleneck.
A "Starvation" alert appears, and duplicants report food they cannot reach. The fridges are close to empty. A viewer suggested hungry duplicants will eat food lying somewhere on the map, which the commentary takes as a fair point. Another duplicant is printed, and made a cook.
Germs take over
Then "Food Poisoning" shows up, and later a tooltip finds its germs in the polluted water. The lowest immune system in the colony reads 2 percent. A sick duplicant finally uses a medical bed, something the commentary had been trying to work out. A few minutes later comes slimelung. "Everybody wash your hands."
The duplicants stop building and spend their time resting, washing and being sick. The death count reaches five. The commentary sums up what the colony taught: next time, a clean water tank in the middle, converters on either side, and polluted water tanks beyond those, so either side can feed the clean tank.
Where it ends
The last look shows a natural gas generator reading "Generator Idle," with carbon dioxide around it. The alert list reads starvation, hypothermia, throwing up, and a colony that "requires Med-Beds." The commentary calls it: "I'll just call it off before everybody dies, but it was fun." The pause menu comes up and the stream ends, the last episode of Season 3 on the channel.
