Ring Dial, Episode 1: Quern

  • Published on

This is the first video of Quern: Undying Thoughts, a puzzle game the commentary calls "a Myst-style type thing." Basket starts on an island of stone buildings and wooden walkways, fixes a broken door, scouts a town of machines that do nothing yet, and comes back to crack a ring dial on a barred gate. The video ends with a new tool in the inventory and no idea yet where it goes.

A piece missing from the door

The game opens beside a stone archway with a chunk missing from a round recess, and a table with a letter on it. The on-screen hint says "Letters help you progress in the game." The first letter reads "Welcome. I am Professor William Maythorn," and admits to "trapping you in this world."

A quarter-circle piece of stone sits nearby. In the inventory it can be turned over, and its back has small triangle shapes. Fitting it into the recess takes a few tries: "I need to have the one that's by itself pointing down." Then: "Aha, we figured things out." The symbol is whole and the door opens onto a wooden walkway.

A dial with no answer

Past the door is a town with a barred gate and a big round dial on it. The rings turn when dragged. "I understand the mechanics of this particular device, but there's no, at least right here, there doesn't seem to be an answer."

A round stone dial of concentric rings set in a barred iron gate, one dark wedge of ring segments at the top and a metal pointer reaching out from the center, with a dim room behind the bars

The rest of the town is the same. A door with a gear symbol won't take anything, and another door is stuck. The blocks in a sliding frame tied to a rope won't stay up. A plate of what the commentary calls "petrified acorns" goes into the inventory, with no use for it yet.

Out to the Hanging Platform

A path out of town brings up "Area Discovered: Hanging Platform." There's a lever on the far side that can't be reached from here. A second letter tells of an archaeologist searching for the Dulmar, and says the island was given a new name, Quern. A torch gets picked up, a door is locked, and the path dead-ends. The gate in town has to come first.

Solving the dial

Back at the gate, Basket flips between the dial and the drawings in the letters, setting each ring to match: the outer ones first, then "2 o'clock," "eleven," and "four o'clock." The gate opens.

Looking through an open gateway into a small candlelit room with a rug patterned like a maze on the floor and a wooden chest against the back wall

Inside are a maze rug, drawings of an arched doorway, a pine tree and a fish pinned to the wall, a bowl of acorns, and a hammer that can't be taken. The chest holds a tool with a handle on each end. "I now have a thing to spin things."

Where it ends

The commentary expects "a hexagon that I stick it into" and goes looking around town, but nothing tried takes the tool. The video ends with Basket walking a path in town, carrying the tool and the torch, still looking for the spot.
