Mines, Episode 20: Quern

  • Published on

This stream of Quern picks up where Episode 19 stopped, with a battery that shuts its room when it leaves the pedestal. The first part of the hour goes to finding the right weight to leave in its place. The new battery opens the way into the Mines, where a power dial takes the longest stretch. What comes out of the mines turns into another battery, which opens the gear building. The video ends in a room the game calls The Mechanics.

The right weight

"So here we are where we left off." The plan is to put something heavy on the pedestal so the door stays open when the battery comes off. A potion in the bucket is out: the brewing station will not take the container back. Instead, a spoon fills the bucket with dust. Heavy as it is, it does not hold the pedestal down. Along the way a fire gets lit in the stone oven, for no clear reason yet.

The idea that works is to weigh a battery: "how heavy are these batteries?" One comes off another machine and goes on the scale against the bucket. The bucket is too heavy. "Aha! Okay, I can dump out the bucket." A few scoops come out until the scale is even. At the pedestal the battery comes off, the door starts to close, and the bucket goes down in its place. "The game has saved. I am so smart."

A voice by the path

On the way out, a glowing teal light drifts along the path and the game shows its words: "Who are you that wanders this world uninvited?" Then: "You can't simply enjoy the power of Quer'nelok... Not without consequences..." It ends with "You must leave the same way you came here... for your own sake."

The battery goes into the battery room, and the commentary reads what it unlocks: "the jug and the pickaxe." One of the newly opened doors is a closet in the alchemy lab with a tap for a liquid. Another leads underground, and the screen says "Area Discovered: Mines."

The power dial

In the mines, pulling a lever lifts a gate for a moment before it drops back down. Next to it is a round dial with a lever in the middle and four knobs around it, and a gauge that fills yellow toward a red end. A sign nearby shows pluses and minuses. Moving the lever to a knob adds to the gauge or takes away from it, and reaching the red end resets everything.

The commentary turns it into numbers: the goal is eleven, there are five moves, one knob adds seven and another takes away five. Several tries run into the end too early. Then: "7, minus 5, 7 more, minus 5... and then we want 7 more, yes!" A buzzing starts. "We have electrified this thing." With the lever pulled again, the way past the gate opens.

Casting a battery

Past the gate is a small lab with a note: "This is the exact place where I achieved the breakthrough." It describes a white mineral as "the compressed and purified version of the natural, locally common, reddish-orange colored energy crystal." The lab holds an empty battery and a mold with "two little nubs."

The mold gets filled from the tap in the alchemy closet. "I got to cook it." It goes into the oven lit earlier: "that's why we set the thing on fire earlier." Turned out of the mold, the piece is solid.

In the battery room the parts go together, and the new battery goes in: "we can now get into the gear building."

Turning the rings

The gear building's doors are blocked, but a ladder leads up to a control panel. It turns the building's rings, a few at a time. "There are four layers and there are a couple of different modes," and each mode links different rings. The work is to line up the openings with a window, ring by ring, switching modes to free the one that needs to move.

After a few rounds, a walk around the building finds it open: "Oh, look at that. The mechanics." The screen says "Area Discovered: The Mechanics."

Where it ends

A round metal workbench under two lamps inside a room of gears and pipes, with a sealed letter and a jar on it, under the game's "Area Discovered: The Mechanics" text

A letter on the workbench begins: "You've managed to get into the mechanics. Clearly, you've completed all of my previous challenges." It warns against someone who would "try to poison your mind." The commentary points at a device in the room: "next time I play this, it's going to be important to remember that this thing exists." Then: "that's going to be the end of the stream." The video ends there, in The Mechanics.
