This is the last stream of Quern. Basket works through the lower levels of the Mechanics, a room of crystals that make sounds, and a library with a door that has to be spelled open. Then comes a choice between two crystals: Basket picks one, watches the credits, loads a save, and picks the other. The video ends at the game's main menu.
The lower Mechanics
The video opens on a voice with subtitles, picking up from the end of the last one: "You have to go alone now! But soon... we will meet again." A tunnel the game names Right Tunnel leads to a lever, more teleporting, and a letter: "These are the lower levels of the Mechanics." "We're almost at the end of the letters," the commentary says.
Down here are a door that won't open, "a gigantic combination lock," and a machine full of "buttons, buttons, buttons."
The machine has four round dials that take numbers from minus three to three, with Start and Reset buttons, and each dial turns some of the rings of the room around it. About ten minutes go to working out which rings move together.
The answer comes partly by surprise: "Somehow that worked out great, not sure why. I guess negative three is the same as one." The rings line up and Basket walks into a room the commentary recognizes as the one from upstairs.
Next, rooms can be moved between lettered spots, A, B and C. Moving them around opens one with a wheel inside: "We have a slot machine wheel, that's great." A second dial setting, with a room moved up to A, gives another. The wheels go into a drum that is, in the commentary's words, "like a slot machine," and then it is "time to crack the safe." A missed gear gets carried back "through the safe because the bridge is out," and it starts an elevator going down.
Listening to the crystals
At the bottom are five dials and a row of crystals, each with its own sound. "So this is where you can listen to the crystals." A chalkboard nearby shows eight crystal shapes, each with a number.
The dials go up to eight, and the commentary settles on matching each crystal's sound to a number on the chart. It takes a lot of listening, with guesses kept in the notebook, and one crystal sits between a 2 and a 6 until the last try. "Okay, there we go." The door opens. "Open sesame."
The Library
The game names the next room The Library, and the voice is back: "So he led you into his library... I have to admit, it's truly beautiful." It holds a typewriter that the commentary says "translates to their language" and a screen showing "6-3-2" and the line "Fortunae meae, multorum faber."
The numbers point at the lines printed under each collected letter. "It's not the letters themselves, it's all the garbage on the bottom of the pages." Page, word and letter, one at a time, the commentary spells out S, A, E, C, U, L, U, M.
Each letter is then built out of line pieces on a red padded door. "Is this the completed L-shape? It is. Lock it in." The last one goes in and the door opens. A vase Basket has carried around goes on a stand inside. "I just got an achievement for that."
Two endings
Behind the library is what the commentary calls "the backstage," with names written on the walls and fake books on the shelves. A letter asks for one thing: "I need you to open Quern. For everyone." The other voice asks for the opposite: "You must destroy the gateway." Further on, a huge machine, built "to think," reads "Calculation completed."
Then the subtitles lay out the choice. "You must insert the green crystal." And: "If you insert the red crystal, the ancient gateway should overload and break down." The commentary's answer: "We can do both."
The red crystal goes in first, and the round window over the gateway glows red. "You did what I couldn't do. you imprisoned the curse of this world forever," the subtitle reads. A portal opens, Basket walks through it, the subtitle says "Goodbye," and the screen goes white. The game's title comes up and the credits roll.
"We're going to do both endings." A save is loaded and this time the green crystal goes in. The voice turns on Basket: "What? How could this be? What did I do wrong?" and then "Now leave and watch your civilization fall apart!" No credits follow on screen, and the commentary says "some things sounded glitched out."
Where it ends
Basket loads a save once more, back in the machine room, and the commentary sums up: "We got most achievements, we beat the game." The video ends on the game's main menu.
