Torque, Episode 11: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 11 of The Witness stays with panels that carry small yellow block shapes, some of them now set at an angle. Basket clears a row of panels by a field of red, spends a long stretch on one panel over a pond before it lights, works a gray panel with colored squares, and stalls on an orange one. The video ends on a walk out to a red metal tower over the water.

A row by the red field

"It only gets harder from here." The video opens at a metal stand of yellow-green panels in the reeds, with red ground behind them. The commentary works the shapes out piece by piece ("let's suppose we put the L shape here"), and the row lights up one panel at a time. A yellow cable runs on from the end of it. "Alright, so we've powered that thing. I guess I unlocked this door, right?"

Tilted shapes

The next panels sit on a stand over a pond with lily pads, and their shapes are drawn turned a little. "Why is it tilted? Oh, okay. So they're tilted. I don't know what that means." One of them takes up most of the video. Gaps cut into its grid keep blocking the line: "if they didn't take out these holes, my job would be so much easier."

In the middle of it, the commentary settles on an idea: "they can be rotated, I think is what this is telling me." Line after line still fails, until "Wow! Okay, I've done a thing." Both panels on the stand light, and a yellow cable carries on along a metal walkway.

Blue, pink and red

The cable leads to a square gray panel on a post, with blue, purple and yellow floor tiles around it. Its grid holds a blue square, a pink square, a red square and a block shape in the middle. After one line the commentary notices that "this thing has made a bridge from red to pink as a result of what I've changed." Red is "broken," so the aim becomes getting "blue and pink to be connected," and a last line goes in with that in mind: "Now blue and pink will be connected at the end of this rotation."

The orange panel

Further on, an orange panel stands in orange and blue reeds beside a dark one, again with shapes and gaps on its grid. "Wow, this game takes a lot of mental power." Layout after layout goes in, and none lights it: "oh the thing's not in there." The commentary leaves it for now: "I'm pretty sure this is the next thing I have to do, but let's explore a little bit, try and rest our brain."

Where it ends

The walk goes along a rocky path and over a grate by the red ground, where the commentary spots something: "Oh, there's a person that's frozen over there." Then it is down to the rocks by the water and out onto a red metal tower, where a green sign with an arrow hangs on a ladder. "I feel like this takes me down below." The video ends there, with the orange panel still unsolved.
