Sound Proof, Episode 31: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 31 of The Witness goes back to the village to get through doors that were locked before. One opens onto a dark room with a speaker, two panels behind glass take some detective work with the scenery, and the video ends at a green panel that will not give up its answer.

Back in the village

The video opens at a teal panel on an orange wall. "I've been here before." The commentary notes it gives no feedback on a wrong line, "the advanced level," and leaves it: "I'll keep in mind this thing exists."

The real goal is the village doors. One has a grid of yellow block shapes and pink suns. The plan is "only a max of two suns together at a time," with shapes that "can be rotated." After a long stretch of routes, "I think this is it. Yes." The door swings open.

The room with a speaker

Inside, a dark hall with blue lights leads past bamboo to a red room with ridged walls. Two panels hang on the wall, a red one with a row of loops and an orange grid with "different sized dots." A wavy line goes in on the red one, but "when we solve one the other one unsets." Then a speaker on a stand: "it's a speaker, interesting. Are we making a sound wave?" Basket leaves it for later.

Nearby, a panel of colored dots on a wooden door is one "it wouldn't even seem possible" to solve. A few more tries get nowhere. "I'm still stuck there."

Treetops on the lake

Down by the water, see-through blue panels stand on posts. The commentary runs through what has worked before: reflections, the background, shadows. Then it clicks: "we're going to go around the tops of the trees, which is apparently the answer."

A white panel by a trellis covered in vines is next, a shadow puzzle where the line follows where "those vines are." It goes through, and a green cable lights up the trellis. "It's actually the cable wasn't a vine."

A green graph

Past it is something new, a green panel with marked axes like a graph. A wrong answer here sets things back: "every time I get this wrong ... I can't brute force it," and it means going back to solve the vine panel again. The commentary checks a windmill nearby for clues, then tries two spots that stand out as "missing from the reflection." Neither works.

Where it ends

A walk back through the village finds a door already open and a building where "those are all off." Basket comes back to the green panel, still unsolved. "I kind of have to solve this one in this area, I think, before I can continue." Then the end card.
