Iron Farm Rail Station: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 84

  • Published on

This episode runs about 57 minutes and opens on a card reading "Episode 84" and "Small Rail Station Construction." The server is on Minecraft 1.12 now, so the chat fills with advancements instead of achievements ("Cover Me With Diamonds," "Stone Age," "We Need to Go Deeper," "Acquire Hardware"). Basket is back at the new small rail station by the iron farm, with the creative copy open in the picture-in-picture window. Basket is the only player seen on screen.

Droppers instead of furnaces

Basket turns stored iron blocks into a stack of hoppers. Then the plan changes. Basket had been capping hoppers with furnaces against lag, but another player pointed out last time that droppers work better, and a viewer agrees they don't take tile entity ticks. So droppers take the furnaces' place as lids on the hoppers, and the rows of droppers that will hold the destination items get hoppers feeding them in a loop that carries items around and back.

Some of them go in pointing the wrong way, and the layout drifts from the creative copy. Basket pulls them out and rebuilds to match. "I guess that's what you get for not really following your tutorial."

The long-term plan

A viewer asks if a rail line will ever cross the water. Basket climbs to the roof to show it. A four-way intersection is planned here. One branch would run through a tunnel under the ocean, and another would rise onto a big suspension bridge straight across to the far coast, then on to a North Station that isn't built yet. "Whether or not it'll all get done or not, we'll see."

Wiring the dropper rows

Back down, redstone dust goes along the top of the droppers. Pressing a destination button up top sets off the line, and each dropper spits one item onto packed ice and water (neither in yet) that will wash it over to the engine. Torches keep mobs from spawning, and Basket shifts a row back one block so anyone stuck down there can walk out without an ender pearl. The items still have to be made and renamed.

A viewer asks what all this is for, and Basket explains: pick a destination, a train shows up, you and your friends or your freight ride it, and each intersection on the way knows which way to turn. Up top in the rain, Basket shows where riders will come in. A door is planned, but there is no way from here into the iron farm yet.

One block too high, again

Next is the part that launches carts. An empty engine cart and a caboose preloaded with items wait at the top. A button sends the destination items along the ice and through hoppers into the engine, and once the box they came from runs empty, both carts launch and two replacements get called up from below. Basket builds the redstone for it, then powered rail and a detector rail that slope and turn their way up to the wall.

"Moment of truth. Did this all come together the way it was supposed to? No." The track arrives too high. After a lot of counting against the creative copy, one spot turns out a block high, and lowering it fixes the rest. "We're only off by one block." A viewer calls it a roller coaster, and Basket agrees it looks like one. Powering one track ends up doing "triple duty" for three.

Where it stands

The last stretch is a counter: a dropper feeding a hopper, with a comparator that notices when an item arrives. Basket starts the line and leaves the rest for later, then lays a turn, a detector rail and ten powered rails to the wall ("amazing, it fit just right") and torches the area. More powered rail is needed. The dropper rows are wired but empty, the ice and water are still to come, and the launch track reaches the top. The stream ends there, and the end card follows with no clip after it.
