Gunpowder: Let's Play Minecraft Hardcore S2 Episode 21

Last episode ended with a working potion brewer and very little gunpowder to feed it. Basket had floated a trip to the desert to hunt creepers. That's where this one ends up, after a long detour through the library.

A jungle with a twirl

Basket needs wood, so a jungle near the base comes down, "with a twirl." A Speed II potion helps with the running around. The clearing turns up a ravine and a spider spawner that Basket hadn't known was under the surface. Back at base, one chest becomes the new wood chest.

An off switch for the zombie spawner

Until now, turning off the zombie spawner meant digging into the walls and placing torches. Basket wants a lever instead. Four redstone lamps go into the ceiling around the spawner, wired to a lever up top. They stay dark until they get a redstone signal, and unlike glowstone they "won't shatter" when broken with a regular pick. One flip, and "this now is an off switch for the zombie spawner."

Between episodes Basket also brewed instant health, fire resistance, regeneration, strength, speed II and night vision potions, plus splash potions of healing for the grinder. Those took the last of the gunpowder: "I'm out of gunpowder, I think."

A backdrop in the library

Then the plan changes. Basket wants a new intro and outro, and that needs a solid-color backdrop. It starts with wool. At the spider spawner from a few episodes back, spiders have piled up in a box, and the Looting sword turns them into "way more" string than needed. Bone meal grows flowers for orange dye, and an orange wool wall goes up behind the enchanting table at the end of the library, with the item frames taken down for now.

Next comes a camera rig: a button, a long chain of repeaters for a delay, and a minecart on powered rails to roll the view forward. The rail shows up in the shot ("Well that's not good at all"), so plan B is to walk with view bobbing turned off.

One more change: the wool picks up shadows. Glowstone makes its own light, so the wool comes down and glowstone goes up, glowing "super green." "Oh wow, that's definitely a green screen."

Creeper night in the desert

At sunset Basket is out in the desert with a couple of chests set up and a stack of potions, night vision and swiftness among them. The target is gunpowder. Basket's sword, Sharpie, has Fire Aspect and Knockback, and on this job they get in the way. Burning mobs fly off, and Endermen teleport away while on fire, so Basket loses track of where things die and what they drop. "Only nine gunpowder," Basket says partway through. Later the count is "twenty six." Skeletons keep knocking Basket around, and Basket wonders if their bows have Punch.

Night two, with strength

For the second night Basket adds a Strength II potion. A creeper goes down in one hit: "Sure seems like it." The catch is that Basket is running so fast the drops fly everywhere and get left behind. The real test is an Enderman, and it takes most of the night to find one. When one finally shows up, it isn't a one-hit kill.

So Basket wants a new sword for Endermen, one without the fire. The episode ends with Basket alive in the desert, heading for the chests and then back to the grinder. More splash potions mean more zombies killed for experience, and that experience will go into the new sword.
