Roguelike Entrance Puzzle: Monumenta Episode 54

  • Published on

The guild tree has grown since last time, but this episode is mostly about one room. johnfal_92 and dash10138 (both by nameplate) found the entrance to the roguelike dungeon and solved its puzzle before. Basket hasn't, so they take Basket to it. The two of them know the answer. Basket asks them not to say it.

A secret chest under the tree

First a quick tour of the plot. There are smaller roots now alongside the big ones, and jungle trees are being grown up the walls of the trunk so it looks more natural before anyone sculpts it. In the basement, dash10138 has put together a storage block in the middle where shared chests can be labeled.

Then Basket shows off the secret. Open the bottom chest, which is a trapped chest, and a hidden compartment opens behind it for the guild's money and good stuff. Open it again and the door closes. A one tick pulse goes into a T flip-flop that moves two pistons, and Basket pulls the wall apart to show the redstone. The plan is to fill the decoy chest with cobblestone so nobody bothers with it.

On the way out, a teleporter confirms the problem: Basket hasn't unlocked the Dungeon Lobby and has to find it first. Basket buys a shulker box and leaves it at home so it doesn't come along to the Anthill.

The Anthill

The entrance is under the Anthill. There are no ants. There are spiders, webs, silverfish and spawners, and the group breaks the spawners first. Then a creeper gets Basket. The chat line reads "BasketMC was blown up by Creeper," the only death this episode. Basket comes back to find the others holding the dropped gear, and they hand it over piece by piece.

Past a fancier hallway, a creeper and a chest, they reach the room with the puzzle.

Nine by nine, and only up

The puzzle is a 9 by 9 grid of blocks. Each button raises a whole row or column by one block. Nothing ever goes down. A separate button starts a new layer, and the real rule took a while to find: a block can only move once per layer. That's what makes it a puzzle and not just counting. Another button teleports you above the build area to look at the shape you're trying to match.

The other two worked on this over two days with spreadsheets. Basket says puzzles like this are what Basket is actually good at in Monumenta, and settles in for the rest of the stream.

Plenty of attempts go nowhere. One opening raises a corner too high to ever fix. Another raises spikes too early. With no undo button, every mistake means a reset. So Basket starts writing it down: numbers across the top, letters down the side, each layer a list of buttons, and bad ideas crossed out in a way that can still be read, "so I don't think about the same idea again." Splitting the first layer into two finally gets it close.

Incorrectly built

On what Basket thinks is the last move, chat says "Roguelike Calibration Lock is incorrectly built!" It's close, though. One more button, column 5, and it works: "The Roguelike Dungeon Lobby has been unlocked!" It ran a bit long, but it got done in one stream. dash10138 whispers "Great work! Much faster than us."

Inside, the Gatekeeper trades Concentrated Experience for a Roguelike Key. The normal key opens the King's Valley Roguelike dungeon with no time limit, as many teammates as you like, and respawns in the main room. You can't re-enter the same run after leaving, though.

The lobby teleporter is unlocked now, so nobody has to walk back through the Anthill. Basket steps on the magma blocks on the way out, then heads back to the guild plot to drop off the loot.
