The Staff: The Black Willows Quest: Monumenta Episode 56

  • Published on

This one is the quest you need before the bonus dungeon. Basket hasn't done it, and neither has JJBonsig. dash10138, WonderSim and johnfal_92 come along too, so it's five players, and the feeling going in is that five should make it easy. Everyone also has new passive abilities to try out. dash10138 is a cleric, so the hearts floating around come from standing near Dash.

A book in the cave

The start is near Nyr, down what the group calls the diving board. There are a couple of spawners and some mobs that won't take knockback, which nobody likes. Then Basket opens a book and is suddenly in a quest: The Staff, long and easy. The book reads "From Nothing to Water. From Water to Mud. From Mud to Clay. From Clay to Life." That's the hint for the order of four shrines, and you have to do them in order. Basket also has a plain Carved Staff now, marked as a quest item.

Working out the order takes some talk. Water is first. Earth added to water makes mud. Fire would turn mud into clay. Air is last, and the joke is that you give the clay mouth to mouth so it can breathe.

Water and earth

At the water shrine, the group goes up the back way to skip the creeper spawners and speed runs the objective. "The power of water pours into your staff," and Basket has a Water Staff.

For earth they take boats from Nyr. Jake Finch hands out a boat if you listen to the jokes. With five players the earth shrine falls apart fast, though poison spiders and a creeper that blows open a chest keep it interesting. There's a chest way up top that some of the group had never noticed. "The power of earth rumbles into your staff," and it's a Mud Staff. A ponder stone gets picked up for the guild collection, for whenever someone does white wool.

Fire and air

The fire shrine is right outside Farr, next to a big tree, with lava below and blazes on both sides. The power of fire arcs into the staff and makes it clay. It turns out the staff only has to be in your inventory, not in your hand.

On the way to the last one, someone mentions rares take 30 levels to repair now, and they stop to look at a windmill in Farr that isn't turning yet.

The air shrine is the one with the super jump mobs. They hit you with a potion and suddenly you can jump really high. There's a spider jockey in golden armor too. Then chat reads "The power of air soars into your staff, completing it with a bright flash! THE STAFF COMPLETE! Awarded Elemental Staff and 1 Prestige." The staff has Infinity on it. "If only it worked that way."

The Cave of Secrets

There's one more step. Down the hill is the Cave of Secrets, with poison spiders, creepers, and witch and creeper spawners hidden up in the trees. Someone explains that a mapper named Brown hid nine Brown Corp hangouts around the world, and finding them all earns a uniform.

At the end, holding the staff, Basket gets "Found bonus dungeon. The staff whisks you off to an unknown location." It's a lobby, and the Gatekeeper has a Bonus Key for the King's Valley bonus dungeon that needs at least three players. Someone says it costs 64, and that yellow's is 128. Nobody runs the dungeon today. They head back out to find the others, and it counts as a productive night.
