Into the Nether: MHC Anything Goes Episode 5

  • Published on

Day five of Michael Deering's December 2013 challenge opens in the desert, where Scoti_Garbidis is in trouble. "He's covered with badness! Come on, Basket, we gotta save him." Basket finds a creeper and a spider out on the sand, and in the scramble Scoti_Garbidis takes a couple of friendly hits. "Just apologize and let's move on." "Sorry."

A portal under the base

The 14 obsidian from day four finally get used. The question over voice chat is where the portal should go. "I don't want it in our sweet special thing that we're gonna make." "Make it down underneath." So Basket digs out a stone room below the base, sets the obsidian frame with the diamond pickaxe and lights it with flint and steel. Then Basket heads back to the chests to travel light, leaving the diamond pickaxe and the water bucket behind and taking an iron pickaxe instead. "I do not take lightly the sacrifice you're making, Basket." The shopping list: glowstone, "as much as we can get," and quartz if it's right there, but nothing worth getting hurt over.

Alone in the Nether

Basket steps through and comes out in netherrack tunnels. The first glowstone turns up within a couple of minutes, and the dust starts stacking in the hotbar. Zombie pigmen wander the lava-lit caves with their gold swords. Up at the base the team keeps an ear on the trip. "Don't die, man." "Don't, don't, dude, do not, do not die."

Glowstone on the ceiling

The glowstone grows out of the netherrack walls and ceilings, and Basket places cobblestone to get close to the clusters, breaks them loose and collects the dust. By the time Basket walks back through the portal there are almost two stacks of glowstone dust in the inventory, and someone does the math on blocks: it takes four dust for each one.

Walls, gates and a building plan

Up top the team spends the day on a new walled-in area. The wall goes all the way around ("There's no way to get in, though, so have a nice life, everybody"), fence gates go in, and someone hands over a pile of torches: "There's 59, make it work." One teammate counts out thirteen and a half stacks of sandstone. The acacia trees inside the wall get moved to the outside "because I think they'll grow better if they've got a little bit of room," and there is talk of a second story.

No clock today

Down in the underground room, Basket lays gold and redstone out on the crafting grid and a clock shows in the output slot. The team has only four redstone, and the verdict over voice is quick: "No, no, that is a complete waste of time and resources." Basket picks up the diamond pickaxe again instead and heads into the caves to look for more redstone.

Sunrise underground

Basket is still mining torch-lit tunnels, with a creeper about, when the sun comes up over the lot. No redstone has turned up on screen yet. "Okay guys, sun's up. We should probably call this an episode." All four are still alive, and the end card follows with nothing after it.
