Day four of Island Survival, Michael Deering's April 2014 challenge, opens with the edited intro and then the words "Day 4" and "Quest for Sugarcane" over the underground farm room. The team is crowded in among the wheat and the torches, and the job for the day is in the title. Paper for the enchanting table needs sugar cane, and nobody has found any yet. "I think we should see if there's any sugarcane up on the top."
Searching the beach
Food is short too. "We're low on food." "I have one apple." "I have no food." Basket sorts through the chests, heads up to the surface and asks for a partner in the search. Sayulily comes along, and the two walk the sandy edge of the island. "Is it probably like on the outside by the ocean or something?" "Yeah, we're gonna search by the ocean." They work along the shore on the sand, and nobody in Basket's view steps into the sea. No sugar cane turns up anywhere. On the way back Basket tosses some wheat to Sayulily.
Cows instead
"I didn't find sugarcane, but I come bringing gifts." The gifts are cows. Up by the house the team is chopping trees and fencing a pen, with Max_Writer, Steel_Douglas, Sayulily and optimus1971 all around it. "Did you get leather?" "I got two leather, three steaks." "You can make an enchanting table with it." The herding is slow: "I can't get them to follow me." The chat shows Max_Writer leaving the game and rejoining a moment later. "I just timed out." Basket feeds wheat to the cows in the pen and red hearts pop up over them. Then the chat shows optimus1971 earning Bake Bread. "Congratulations, Optimus." "I've been wanting to bake bread for years."
Water on lava
Night falls, and Basket goes back underground through the mineshaft and the base, then down a long tunnel with Scoti_Garbidis. "We're going to get the lava right here." In a cave below, a lava pool sits right next to gold ore. "Ooh, gold." Basket pours a water bucket over the lava, the top of the pool turns to obsidian, and Basket mines out the gold. The poured water spreads across the cave floor.
Deeper into the cave
The group pushes on into a ravine with water running through it. "There's a creeper in this waterfall." A skeleton shows up near the torches. "Oh, hi skeleton." Basket's health bar drops from ten hearts to eight along the way. There is iron everywhere ("Oh my gosh, lots of iron here"), and Basket digs out iron ore while someone offers to smelt iron swords for anyone who lacks one. The chat shows Scoti_Garbidis earning Hot Topic.
Almost morning
"<Max_Writer> Almost morning," the chat reads, and Basket answers there too. Then Scoti_Garbidis asks "tell us when end of day," and Max_Writer types "morning guys." Basket is still down in the cave when the call comes: "All right, well, this is the end of our episode." No death message appears in chat. There is still no sugar cane, so paper is still the missing piece for the enchanting table. The credits roll after that, and nothing comes after them.
