Chicken Coop: MHC June 2013 Episode 4

  • Published on

The title card reads "Minecraft Hardcore Challenge June 2013," with "E04" in the corner. Basket has one job for the start of day four. Michael Deering, the host, pointed out in the comments on the last video that the chickens are probably too far from the base to lay any eggs. "So that's my first thing I want to set up today."

A pen before the chickens

Up the ladder, Basket puts iron in the furnace to smelt and dumps some junk in the chest. The pumpkins have done well enough that bonemeal can wait: "I do have quite a few pumpkins already." Basket builds the coop first, "in case it takes a while" to get any chickens over. It is a five by five pit, sunk into the grass.

The long walk

Then comes the luring. Basket holds out seeds and leads the chickens along the cobblestone path over the river. It is slow going, since they lose interest if Basket moves too fast. One of them drops off into the river. "We lost one. I went too fast." Basket gives up on the bridge after that and coaxes the rest over slowly. "All I need is two."

Hoppers and water

With two chickens parked nearby, Basket heads in for the rest of the parts: two chests, two hoppers and a pile of fences. The hoppers go into the floor of the pen, the fences go around the top, and two buckets of water fill the bottom. By the time Basket comes back, one chicken has already wandered in. "Oh, he already made it in, well, what a guy." There's an egg to grab, and a gate goes on last. "We only spent about 10 minutes doing that. I guess that's an investment."

The day is nearly gone. Basket harvests and replants wheat, takes some sugar cane and plants more, lights up the area and chops one tree before dark. Back inside with the door closed, that egg becomes another pumpkin pie. Basket packs stairs for the trip down and eats a pie "even though I don't need to right now."

Back to the lava cave

The goal underground is diamonds, enough for an enchanting table. The big cave from last time turns up emerald ore, more iron, redstone and a vein of gold, but no diamonds. The stream keeps pushing Basket toward the lava, even after one source is blocked off: "Apparently there's a second water source."

"Hey, this is where I always see creepers." Sure enough, one is waiting on a ledge between the torches, and the stone sword takes care of it.

A boring mine

The caves go everywhere, and Basket would rather have better gear before exploring them. So the plan changes to a plain branch mine at the right depth: "I'm hoping to find diamonds and not be smothered by gravel." The inventory fills up, which matters: "In case I run across diamond, I don't want to assume it's going to pop in my inventory." Basket mines some iron next to lava, putting water down first to stay safe. The other find is "a bunch of stupid emeralds."

With the timer running low, Basket walks back to the ladder so the next episode won't start out lost, and climbs. "Hopefully those chickens are laying eggs up there so we can get a whole stack of pie." The game pauses on the ladder with day four done and the run still going, and the end card follows with no gameplay after it.
