Diamonds by the Lava: MHC Lacto Ovo Pacifist Episode 2

  • Published on

Day two of the Lacto Ovo Pacifist Challenge, Michael Deering's June 2015 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge. The title card reads "Day 0010", which is two in binary. The rules haven't changed: no meat, fish, mushrooms or rotten flesh, no harming any mob, and nothing taken from a village except one trade for each gold ingot. Basket's team of four is still together, with Scoti_Garbidis, pikerize and pulse2010 all showing up in chat. Basket starts the day where day one ended, underground beside the furnace and the ladder shaft.

Gold at the bottom of the shaft

Basket keeps digging down and hits gold ore almost right away. "Oh, look at that gold right there." Gold matters more than usual this month, because one ingot buys one thing from the village. Someone asks how many bars it will make, and the answer is five. The plan comes together on the call: "That might be enough to go into the village, grab some crops, and then we could move out into the prairie and do our own thing." Then a request on the call: "You got that gold, Basket? Can I come get it from you?" "Sure."

A shopping trip on the call

Basket never leaves the mine, so the village trip only comes through as voices. There's a debate over what the gold can buy and how the trade works. "You can trade one gold for one item with the villagers." "I think I'm gonna get potatoes because they're gonna be the most versatile." "All right, I'm gonna put the five gold in the chest here by this farm." Then a small disaster: "I ate one of the uncooked potatoes, I guess." Back in the cave, the chat shows Scoti_Garbidis earning Bake Bread. By the middle of the episode, Basket's hunger bar is full again.

Lava and diamonds

Lower down, the tunnels open into caves with lava pools across the floor, and Basket works around them a block at a time. Then a voice on the call: "I found diamonds, I just have to get to it." Basket mines into a pocket with diamond ore and redstone side by side. Back up the line someone counts the haul: "So we have four diamonds."

Iron gets turned into armor, too. "Here you go. I went shopping, got you some man pants." Basket's armor bar fills up, and from here on Basket is digging in a set of iron armor.

Close calls in the tunnels

With four people mining close together, there's a scare. "It was an accident. Accidents can happen." "My heart is going like a million miles an hour." Somebody else sees the funny side: "I was just thinking we should all stand around lava together." Scoti_Garbidis and pulse2010 both turn up on Basket's screen in the lava caves.

Still day two

Someone wonders if the episode is over. "No, it's still day two." The hunt for more gold goes on, though one voice points out they're at the wrong depth: "This actually isn't the right level for gold. This is diamond." Basket keeps tunneling through stone and redstone while a voice sings, "Digging in the dark, everybody loves this." "I almost just put my face into a bunch of lava." No death lines show up in chat, and Basket is still alive. The house on the plains hasn't been started. The credits follow, with no gameplay after them.
