Enderman in the Lava: MHC Lacto Ovo Pacifist Episode 3

  • Published on

Day three of the Lacto Ovo Pacifist Challenge, Michael Deering's June 2015 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge. The title card reads "Day 0011", which is three in binary. The rules still hold: no meat, fish, mushrooms or rotten flesh, no harming any mob, and nothing taken from a village except one trade for each gold ingot. Basket starts where day two ended, deep in the lava caves, and the camera opens in third person at an angle that shows the lava pools straight through the stone. "Welcome back, I'm cheating." The rest of the team is on the call all episode, but none of them turns up on Basket's screen this time.

Food talk on the call

Hunger is the problem of the day, and with meat off the menu the options are thin. Someone on the call sums it up: "Might as well keep cutting down oak trees, that's our best source of food right now." A cake comes up and gets shot down over cocoa beans, until somebody points out "it's not a chocolate cake." Then a warning nobody wants to hear: "Oh, I started taking damage from starving, I'm gonna eat my bread." Down in the caves a mushroom is right there and off limits. "I see a mushroom. Can't eat."

Emeralds between the lava pools

Basket keeps mining around the lava and opens up a block of emerald ore on a narrow strip of stone between two pools. "Oop, emeralds." On the call the emeralds sound useful: "Well, the emeralds we can trade." "Was there a trade for coal at the village?" "Yes. There was coal for emerald." Nobody remembers an emerald trade for food, though.

An enderman walks into the lava

A pacifist run turns every mob into something to steer around. "This whole not being able to kill anything makes caving really nervous." An enderman shows up at the edge of a lava pool in Basket's cave, and Basket keeps mining a few blocks away. Then it steps into the lava and catches fire. "Whoa, don't die. That enderman walked into lava."

Out after dark

The trip above ground only comes through on the call. One voice is out hunting for pumpkins and apples: "I'm gonna do the half slab trick." Another asks the obvious question, "Falling down doesn't cost you anything, it's just climbing up, right?" Then: "Oh, the sun's gonna go down. I'm gonna be by myself tonight, guys. I can't get back before it's dark." Over at the farm the potatoes go in the ground, with a firm request: "Please replant, because when I get home I want mashed taters on my plate."

Smelting at the furnaces

Basket reaches a stack of furnaces beside a crafting table and loads them with iron ore and coal. On the call, another find: "Found a ton of iron."

Waiting for day four

The rest of the night is long straight tunnels through stone and redstone. A voice admits, "My hunger is going down. Would really help me if I had even the smallest bit of food right now." The day ends with Basket climbing a ladder up a narrow shaft. "Come daybreak, I'll head your way." Basket's hearts are full, the iron armor is still on, and the hunger bar sits a little over half. No death lines show up, and the house on the plains still hasn't been started. The credits follow, with no gameplay after them.
