Giant Mushrooms: MHC Mission Impossible Episode 3

  • Published on

Day three of Mission Impossible, Michael Deering's January 2014 challenge, starts in the same cave where day two ended. Food is still the problem, since passive mobs are off limits, but someone on voice sounds hopeful: "This is probably the last day that we need to be here, guys." Steel_Douglas, still in the Santa suit, is by the portal, and Basket crafts a pair of iron boots before heading out.

Back to the Nether

The plan is mushrooms. "We're gonna go find some mushrooms." Basket steps through the portal onto the red netherrack, where zombie pigmen wander between the lava falls, and Max_Writer's "left the game" and "joined the game" lines pop up in the chat a moment later. Someone wants cobblestone around the portal "so they can't shoot at us," and the voice chat gets loud: "He shot me in the face!" "Are you alive?" "For now, yes." Basket's hearts stay full through all of it. The mushrooms don't turn up, though. "I'm not seeing any more mushrooms." "There's so much lava everywhere." Basket walks back through the portal, and back home someone grumbles about the "stupid new nether."

Room to grow

The new idea is to grow the farm's mushrooms into giant ones with bone meal. Someone takes one of each kind up to the surface for a try, and Basket starts digging out the cave around the farm to make space. The fishing keeps going, with mixed results: two loaves of bread, and leather boots off the line. "Sometimes you just gotta eat the leather boots." Then another player calls Basket back down: "You were right Basket, I was wrong. Now come down here and try to bone meal some of them." The room needs height too: "You're going to have to give it like 12 to 15 high." A skeleton in the cave helps out with the bone meal supply. "Got him, got him. Ooh, got a bone. Two bones."

Gold in the ravine

The digging goes on. Basket crafts an iron pickaxe, and the clearing opens onto a ravine. "There's a ravine." Gold ore shows in the wall, with Steel_Douglas right beside it, and Basket mines it out. Later: "I'm gonna cook up this gold." Someone has been covering the lava over the room too: "I'm gonna obsidianize this lava."

Giant mushrooms

With the room finally big enough, a brown mushroom goes in the middle and the bone meal goes on. "C'mon brown!" "Did it grow?" "Oh yeah!" A giant brown mushroom fills the room, its flat cap pressed up near the ceiling, and Max_Writer breaks into the cap. They try a red one, and then another brown. "Whoa my gosh, everything just exploded." The count after all that: "We've got 24 brown, 30 red."

Packing for the stronghold

That's enough food to leave on. "I think we have enough food." Basket crafts another iron chestplate and drops it in front of Max_Writer, and makes a bowl of mushroom stew. Someone has advice about that: "Don't make the stew until you need it." The team talks about splitting up the coal, wood and iron, and the sun is close: "Sun's about to come up, guys." Basket climbs out of the cave onto the snow at sunrise, next to Steel_Douglas, Max_Writer and a teammate in a green shirt. "We stopped right here, guys." Basket ends day three alive, and no death shows on screen. The end card follows, with nothing after it.
