Michael Deering's July 2014 challenge is called Naked & Afraid, and the rules live up to it: no armor, no swords or bows, no eating meat, and no leaving the jungle biome. Basket plays it as a duo with Sayulily, and both of them have to survive. The call opens with "Basket, how are you doing today?" and the answer, "I'm very, very warm in this jungle."
Into the jungle
There's a jungle temple nearby, and that's the first stop. On the way Basket grabs cocoa beans off the trees, and Sayulily's nameplate bobs along through the undergrowth just ahead. A false alarm about melons turns into real ones: a melon block on the jungle floor, and Basket's hotbar soon holds six slices.
With swords off the table, the weapon for this month is the axe. "Did find out today that wood axes only do three points of damage," against four for a wood sword, and there's no blocking either. "I'm used to going to one and blocking right away when I see a creeper." Trees get punched, crafting tables go down, and the achievement lines for both players start filling the chat.
Clearing the temple
A tree and a pile of dirt block the temple entrance, so out come wooden pickaxes. "Gotta be brave." Inside, the tripwires get cut before anyone walks into them. "I forgot that the part of the trap is that it shoots you. So let me break that." Basket opens a dispenser holding arrows, useless without a bow, though one idea on the call is to turn the dispensers into a kind of tower defense. The lever puzzle gets the same treatment as the wires: "Just go ahead and break it."
The chest pays out bones, iron, gold and rotten flesh, and they come away with sticky pistons and redstone too.
Moving in
The temple becomes home. A crafting table and furnace go in, torches light the halls, and Basket wires levers to the sticky pistons for a door. "Oh, you did a sticky piston door. Oh, that's clever." "I figure we have the resources, you know, might as well." Oak saplings get planted outside, because "apples might be a vital food source."
At sunset, with hunger slipping and meat banned, someone reaches for the chest's rotten flesh: "I'm gonna eat a rotten flesh and hope for the best." One of them gets away with it and one doesn't.
Down to bedrock
The night goes underground. They dig a shaft straight down from the base and put stairs in it, "because this is MHC," which means saving food instead of jumping. Iron shows up on the way, then gold. "Oh, there's some gold." The shaft reaches bedrock, and there's water at the bottom too, which could mean "our wheat farm" later. "Certainly have the iron for it, especially as we're not wasting it for" armor.
Morning at the temple
Basket climbs back up laying stone stairs, with Sayulily on the stairs too, and pokes out of the temple just as the sun comes up. "Oh, there's a skeleton burning." It doesn't burn all the way.
Both players are alive at the end of day one, with no death on screen. The episode closes on a few shots of the pair on the temple steps, then the end card, with no gameplay after it.
