The Nether Portal: MHC Naked & Afraid Episode 2

  • Published on

Day two of Michael Deering's July 2014 challenge starts back at the jungle temple, behind Basket's sticky piston door. The rules haven't changed: no armor, no swords or bows, no meat, and both Basket and Sayulily have to make it. "We're fearless." The food situation is less brave. "Food wise, what do we have?" "Not much."

Wood, dirt and a lot of sheep

The plan for the morning is resources: a stack of wood, and dirt for a farm. Basket digs up a stack of dirt by the river while sheep wander through, which gets a quick rules check on the call. "So we can kill these sheep, we just can't eat them." Cows would be fair game too, for leather. A cave mouth gets a careful look and then gets skipped.

Back at the temple, logs go into the furnace for charcoal, a bucket gets made from the iron, and someone has picked up an apple: "Oh, I got an apple for somewhere." That starts a different idea: "We could technically make a golden apple, but I don't know why we would want to do that." "Because we can." There's even talk of being "the first team on day whatever it is, day two, to get a golden apple," plus a clock, so they can tell the time underground.

A farm under the temple

The farm goes in below the base. Dirt gets laid in a stone room, water goes into the wall, and seeds go into the tilled rows, with one melon broken down for melon seeds. The chat shows Basket earning Time to Farm!, and the temple loot finally gets used: the bones become bone meal, and the wheat shoots up. Nobody wants a wolf, though. "I think having wolves is too dangerous." "Could accidentally smack each other and then challenge would be over." In this challenge, "if one of us dies, then we both lose."

Diamonds by bedrock

Then it's back down the stairwell to mine. Basket swaps to an iron pickaxe, sets down a crafting table and furnace in the mine to smelt as they go, and the chat fills with Hot Topic, Acquire Hardware and Getting an Upgrade. Lava turns up in the stone, and "it is almost midnight already, which is crazy."

Near the bottom a cleared block opens onto diamond ore. "You were just, like, one block away from diamonds." The chat shows Basket and Sayulily both earning DIAMONDS!, then both earning Diamonds to you! as gems get tossed back and forth. Redstone comes out of the same pocket.

Lava into water

"We're totally getting sidetracked. We're meant to build another portal frame." The trick with no diamond pickaxe to spare is to make the obsidian in place: water goes into a mold, and lava buckets get poured in one block at a time. It takes several buckets from the lava pools nearby.

The last piece goes in just before dawn. Nobody has flint, so Basket digs gravel until some drops, and a flint and steel lights the frame purple.

A power team

The episode ends with a third-person shot of the pair in front of the portal and a victory lap on the call: "We got diamonds. We got clocks. We got golden apples. We got a nether portal. We're a power team." Nobody steps through yet. "We're going into the nether, maybe."

Both players are alive at the end of day two, with no death on screen. The end card follows the portal shots, with no gameplay after it.
