Into the Nether: MHC Naked & Afraid Episode 3

  • Published on

Day three of Michael Deering's July 2014 challenge opens where day two stopped, at a lit portal in the bottom of the mine. "We're starting a little late because we had a cliffhanger last episode." The rules still apply: no armor, no swords or bows, no meat, and Basket and Sayulily both have to survive.

Five diamonds, one axe

First, the diamonds. Between them there are five ("so I have two diamonds," "and I have three"), and the options get talked through: a pickaxe, an enchanting table, or an axe. "I didn't see any cows, and we'll be able to get more diamonds probably, maybe. So let's go with an axe." By the time they reach the portal, Basket has a diamond axe in hand.

Upstairs, the farm is doing well, though one of them admits the layout is wrong: "If you space the food out in rows, it grows faster." The wheat becomes bread, and the chat shows BasketMC earning Bake Bread. Cookies get turned down ("the cookie saturation is too bad"), buckets get split two and two, and bowls get made, because "we'll have mushrooms in the nether."

Through the portal

"Well, it is noon, so let's get to it." The chat shows Sayulily and then BasketMC earning We Need to Go Deeper, and the pair come out on netherrack. The first job on the other side is a cobblestone wall around the portal, so nothing can shoot it out and leave them stranded. "Never hurts to be cautious."

Glowstone and mushrooms

It's a huge cavern, and the haul starts with glowstone off the ceiling. There's talk of batting a ghast fireball back, "return to sender," and the idea gets dropped fast: "Probably not worth it." Torches go down along the way.

Mostly it's mushroom picking, red and brown, for stew. "I have 26 brown mushrooms." The clock doesn't help down here: "We don't know what time it is because we're in the nether." Zombie pigmen wander past, and nobody wants to test whether a held-down click can hit one by accident. "We shouldn't test it right now."

No fortress

The other target is a Nether fortress, and none turns up. "No fortresses yet." "Which is a little disappointing, but you can't have everything." They switch directions, a staircase gets cut down a cliff, and the pair head toward the lava oceans, since that's where the fortress "legs" usually show up. One edge gets nervy: "all of a sudden my guy was all jittery on the edge of that cliff."

Then comes a wide lava lake and "a weird, weird lava fall," and the day runs out. "Oh, it's the end of the episode."

Still in the Nether

The last shot is the two of them in third person, with zombie pigmen crowding in behind. "Oh, yeah, they want to be in the picture." The question for next time is whether they find the way back, and the answer on the call is confident: "Probably, I've been placing torches like religiously."

Both players are alive at the end of day three, still in the Nether, with no death on screen. The end card follows, with no gameplay after it.
