Sad Day: MHC Save Aerdis Village Episode 5

  • Published on

Day five of Michael Deering's October challenge, where the job is to make life good for the villagers of Aerdis Village in hardcore mode. Max_Writer, lostinthefort and Scoti Garbidis are named in the edited-in captions again, each playing their own copy of the seed. The title card calls it "Sad Day," and the sad part doesn't happen in Basket's world.

One fewer on the call

In the first couple of minutes one voice signs off from the call. "I went down to get iron," it says, and then, "I'm dead." The same voice adds, "I left all the gates open and my people are dead." The call answers, "Oh, God, that sucks," and the goodbyes follow. Once that voice is gone the others talk it over. "How will we continue on without Scoti?" "He's out of the running." In hardcore one death ends a run, so the October challenge has one entrant fewer. Someone suggests a little gravestone, "a dirt with a rose on it." Nothing dies in Basket's own game.

Digging for sand

Basket's day starts with a lap of the village, past the farm and the houses, then into the chest at the house base. Then it's out past the wall with a shovel. "I'm going to collect some sand." There's sandstone right there in the village road, but Basket leaves it. "That would be vandalizing my village." Instead Basket starts a quarry, a long trench in the desert just outside the wall, and digs down until the sand gives way. "I'm down to sandstone. That's what I want."

There's a run out to the grassland by the water for dirt too. Back in the village Basket sets dirt blocks into the sand and plants saplings in them.

Sand doesn't go far

At the house base Basket turns the sand into sandstone at the crafting table, and it's a letdown. "Sand doesn't go very far, unfortunately." The answer is to skip the crafting and dig the sandstone straight out of the ground. "I'll have to just mine sandstone instead." Someone on the call explains smooth sandstone: "you take four regular ones, it'll make four smooth, so you don't lose anything."

Night inside the wall

The sun goes down while Basket is still hauling blocks. Zombies show up inside the village after dark. "Okay, so there's a breach in this wall." The iron sword comes out, and later there's a shout of "Creeper!"

Building in sandstone

There are two building jobs for the night. The first is a "super secret project" in the middle of the village, and the recording never says what it is. When it's done: "Now, bring on the golems." The second is a new building, which the description calls Basket's first player-built house. Sandstone and smooth sandstone walls go up block by block, counted out loud, "one, two, three, four, five." Sand goes in the furnace for glass, and the glass becomes panes for the windows.

Sunrise

The night runs out before the work does. The sun comes up over the village with the walls still unfinished. "This building is almost done." Basket ends day five alive. The end card follows, and there's no gameplay after it.
