Day two of Survival Island, Michael Deering's March 2016 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, where the special rule is not to leave the island vicinity. Basket logs back in underground, in the cave found at the end of the first day, "in the middle of combat-ish." Having watched some other entrants' first episodes, Basket has a lead: "I have an idea that there's a zombie spawner somewhere under here. I didn't get the coordinates, but I know that it exists."
Rotten flesh for breakfast
First, a trip back up to the island. Basket chops a tree, still hoping for an apple, then tries a new meal. "I haven't tried to eat rotten flesh yet in this version, so we'll see." It works, with the Hunger effect that comes with it. Then some "1.9 science" at the crafting table: freshly crafted torches keep landing on the right side of the hotbar, no matter where Basket puts the last batch.
A shield in the off-hand
Basket works out the recipe for a shield, new in 1.9. The catch is that it takes the off-hand, where the torches have been living. "I guess I will have to just go back to my old way of doing torches." The shield also fills a corner of the screen. "That's really taking up a lot of my point of view."
Zombies from every direction
Back down the shaft, Basket mines iron and gold and starts opening up the caves. Then the zombies show up, a lot of them, while a creeper hangs back. Basket wonders out loud if they're coming from the spawner. Basket fights them through a gap in the stone, and 1.9's sweep attack hits several at once. A few hits land the other way too. The fights pay out in zombie flesh, and one zombie drops an iron sword.
Following the noise
Basket walls off the side passages, passes lava, and keeps a skeleton at a distance. The zombies keep coming from the same direction, and Basket digs toward them. "Yeah, there it is." It's a spawner. Basket lights the room with torches and blocks the bottom of the opening "so that baby zombies don't wreck my face," then crafts a new pickaxe.
Two chests of loot
The spawner room has two chests. One holds coal, buckets, rotten flesh and a bone. The other has seeds, an enchanted book Basket reads as "Luck of the Sea," and a golden apple. The seeds are beetroot and melon. "So I can actually make a farm and stop eating zombie flesh." Basket isn't sure which kind of golden apple it is. "I'll have to figure that out."
Iron to the toes
A furnace and crafting table go down in the caves, and the iron becomes boots and a helmet. Basket is "all decked out." One side of the room stays open on purpose, so Basket knows where the zombies will come from, and they keep coming. Basket cuts a few down at the gap.
Then the timer goes off. "We have a zombie spawner, tons and tons of iron." Day two ends with Basket alive, at full health, in iron armor, underground beside the spawner. The credits roll after that, with no gameplay after them.
