Day four of Survival Island, Michael Deering's March 2016 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, where the special rule is not to leave the island vicinity. Basket starts underground on the obsidian from last time, a bit lost and low on food. "I don't really remember where exactly I am, so maybe we'll just go in the Nether and we'll go from there." Basket has watched a couple of other entrants start into the Nether, but none of them got very far, so nobody quite knows what's down there yet.
A portal under the island
The water bucket goes over the lava pools and turns them to obsidian, and Basket mines it out for a portal frame. Then comes a snag: no flint, and no gravel to get it from. "There's gotta be gravel in here somewhere." Basket finds some, makes a flint and steel, and lights the portal. Basket also notices 1.9's new attack cooldown indicator on the hotbar, "so that's nice to see," and starts a timer to keep track of the day.
Digging under a lava lake
From the other entrants' episodes, Basket knows there's a lava lake right above this spot, and that lava poured out when they dug through. It happens here too. "Yep, right there, oh god, that's so quick." From then on Basket watches for dripping lava particles before breaking each block and slowly works up the side of the lake. Basket is surprised to find soul sand under the lava. Zombie pigmen wander the tunnels. Basket crafts a new pickaxe, marks the tunnel with torches so the way back is easy to find, and finally climbs out. "Alright, we're out."
Return to sender
Out in the open there's a ghast. Basket makes for cover, eats an apple, and crafts another pickaxe because the old one is about to break. With no bow, the plan is the sword. A fireball lands close and sets Basket on fire for a moment, "don't put me on fire." Basket swings at the next one and sends it straight back. "Yes! Return to sender. I rock."
Food is getting low, and Basket starts thinking about heading back to fish, since the beetroot and the other food at home won't last long.
A bridge to the fortress
Then Basket spots "something of interest" across the lava. It's a Nether fortress. Basket bridges over the lava with cobblestone, slowly, unsure how the shield will behave in 1.9, and calls it "a non-ghast-breakable pathway." At the far end, Basket pillars up along the fortress, finds the supports smaller than expected, and decides to go up the outside, "more exciting but not safe."
Nether wart and the alarm
Inside, Basket finds soul sand, then nether wart growing on it, and harvests it. Then Basket spots wither skeletons and blocks off the passage to think. "Please don't hit me in the face." Basket fights one, and bones drop. "All right, good, I got him."
Then the alarm goes off. "I think I went a little over in this episode." Basket sums up: a fortress found, soul sand and nether wart collected, and blaze rods still needed. The plan is to get those, head back to the main island, brew potions, and maybe cure a villager. "We'll see what happens on Friday."
Day four ends with Basket alive inside the Nether fortress. The pause menu comes up, then the credits roll, with no gameplay after them. This is the last Survival Island episode on the channel.
