The Long Way Home: MHC Zero Chunk Episode 4

  • Published on

The Zero Chunk Challenge goes on, Michael Deering's March 2015 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, where Basket, technascribe, MomofMiners and Frank_n_Honest live inside one chunk and can only place blocks there. The last episode left all four in a little room dug out of netherrack. This one starts there, and it is the last day Basket plays.

Out of the netherrack

The team has found a way out of the tunnels, and there's a warning first. "See where those pigmen are? That is a shelf, do not stand on that." "Knowing me, I will fall into lava." technascribe types a location into chat so nobody gets lost. Then Basket ends up in flames at the edge of the lava and climbs out with half the hearts gone. "I'm burning, I can't place blocks." The no-placing rule makes every climb a dig, so the stairs get cut into the netherrack.

The wrong side of the portal

Back through the portal, the Overworld loads in a stone cave nobody recognizes. "This is a different spot." "We're on the other side of the overworld." Without blocks to place, the only way up is a dug staircase, and the team climbs through the dark until it opens into the bottom of a lake. "Press the spacebar so you float above the water." They come up into a spruce forest in daylight, with Frank_n_Honest on the grass ahead. "Northwest and we'll see our farm."

Testing the book

Back inside the spruce fence, it's chores. Basket sorts the chests, where an enchanted book (Power IV) is waiting, and tries a theory: the book in the crafting grid with diamonds and obsidian. Nothing comes out. "Conclusion is you cannot craft it." "Myth busted." Someone offers pumpkin pie to everyone, and with name tags in the chest, a voice suggests a name for the team's chicken: "Larry the laying chicken."

Blown up in the dark

Basket heads down below the base to mine with the diamond pickaxe, and the caves are dark. "It's hard to find iron without torches." One voice even says "I should keep the obsidian on me, or the diamonds, so I don't lose 'em." Then, in the dark, the screen goes red. Chat reads "BasketMC was blown up by Creeper," and the "You died!" screen comes up. "I didn't even hear him, like, hiss at all."

Watching from the walls

In hardcore that's the end of Basket's run. Chat shows technascribe opping BasketMC and a game mode change, and Basket watches the rest as a spectator, sliding through stone. MomofMiners and Frank_n_Honest head down to the cave furnace, and the talk turns to Basket's things: "The cut obsidian is sitting on the gravel." It is still dark down there. "Creeper, creeper! Run away!"

A grave by the fence

The month's rules say to build a grave for fallen teammates, and the team does it at sunup. A white headstone goes up by the fence with a sign: "R.I.P. BasketMC Taken Out by a Creeper!" Flowers go in front of it, with cobblestone stairs to the side. "Would you like pine or mahogany?" "Spruce." Then a short service: "We miss you, Basket." "Here's a pumpkin pie. Salute to you."

Basket's hardcore run ends here. technascribe, MomofMiners and Frank_n_Honest are still alive at the grave. The end credits follow, with no gameplay after them.
