Spawning Pads: RainCloud SMP Episode 2

  • Published on

Episode 2 picks up where Episode 1 left off, with an iron floor high in the sky and no spawning pads on it. Basket and Scoti_Garbidis spend this one building them: the layout, the water, the trapdoors and a roof. Then they turn out the lights and wait for mobs. Almost nothing comes, and the episode ends with a plan to go light up caves.

Snow and a layout argument

Snow covers the platform. "This snow is going to be a pain." The floor is not finished either, and the iron to finish it turns out to be in an ender chest. They have Haste from a beacon, and 58 logs set aside for trapdoors.

The first question is the shape. Is the top 20 by 20? "It's not a square." The pads go two by two around each drop chute, with a wall on the outside and water sources in the corners pushing out each way. There is some back and forth about which blocks hold water, until one of them admits, "You were right. I screwed that up." To settle it, the pads get laid out one block deep first.

Trapdoors and more wood

The trapdoors eat through the wood quickly. "We're gonna need to get more wood." A trip to the ground follows, to chop trees and plant saplings from a chest downstairs. Along the way they learn the pads "don't need to be three tall, they can be just two tall," which helps with last episode's height problem.

Soon all the trapdoors are in and the roof is on. On the recording, Basket "wants to do a little science": a half slab in the middle of each three by three pad, to keep spiders from spawning.

The test

With every trapdoor closed it is dark inside. "Stuff should start falling on our heads here." One of them waits on the level below, since the pads only work within range. Nothing falls. One hole is still open in the roof, and they wonder if it lets in light, or if the dark caves underneath are taking the spawns. A look inside finds nothing: "not as productive as I had hoped." The half slabs come back out.

Counting mobs

Back on the platform they wait some more. "Hey, creeper, come on down!" Then they check the F3 screen. The count above them is zero. Around them, 130 entities are loaded, in the mountains, near some trees and "a bunch in the ground."

Where it ends

"So maybe you have to light up more stuff." They agree to end the episode there and go caving next time. After the goodbye, a short tag plays with two players on a cobblestone pillar, and the recording says, "It works, by the way," and that the mobs "die when they fall."
