Barracks Redesign: Team B.S. Server Episode 93

  • Published on

Episode 93 is a short one, about 23 minutes, and it starts on top of the barracks at Basket Castle, right where the last episode stopped. Since then Basket has been looking at pictures of real castles online, and the top of the barracks is about to change because of it. Basket is the only player in the game.

What real castles do

The castles that are still standing have a ring of "those things" around the top edge, and Basket can't remember the word. A viewer supplies it: crenellations. "I might remember that." Inside the ring, they usually have some kind of roof, with windows up top to let light in. So the plan changes. Instead of a big flat top, the barracks gets a roof with an opening in the middle, so "during the day it would provide natural light going all the way down into that main hall." The ruins Basket found have no roofs at all, probably because the old wood roofs rotted away.

Birch, a chimney and a fireplace

First a surprise: "Why isn't this floor birch?" It gets pulled up and replaced, with Haste from the beacon speeding up the digging. Stairs go in, and the chimney from the floors below carries on up through this one. Basket wants the fireplace block changed to something easier to see. It has to be a block that comes in a stairs version, though, and 1.13 might add more of those.

The arrow slits still need adding. A floor pattern that alternates, tried earlier as an experiment, comes up for a vote, and a viewer likes it. The stairs to the next floor copy the ones below, starting two up and climbing with slabs. Cracked stone can come later. "We don't have that on us."

Secrets with no ladder

The thick wall still has room for secret sections. Basket weighs a secret door or floor "without it just being a trapdoor," maybe a double piston extender. That would eat into the floor space, and with no ladder it would only be a drop. "You wouldn't be able to get out there," so that idea probably doesn't go up top.

Crenellation placeholders

Stone blocks go up around the top edge as stand-in crenellations. "This is only placeholders, but I'm being very picky." The spacing comes out "even, but in an odd way," so it may get adjusted. On the way, Basket backs into one of the holes left in the floor for secret tunnels. "I forgot about it."

A roof that won't spawn mobs

The roof will be spruce or dark oak, and there's plenty of dark oak, so the roof starts in dark oak. Full stairs go in first, layer by layer. "So far, it doesn't seem too bad." Then it starts to look too steep. Slabs would give a gentler slope, but mobs could spawn on them. The answer is a mix of slabs and stairs, so the slope is gentler and nothing can spawn. "I think that might be what we actually go with in the end."

Basket pulls out the front rows to try it: a slab layer first, then stairs worked in above. Somewhere near the middle, the skylight opening still has to fit. "I find myself always remaking roofs." The episode stops partway through the redo. The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
