Barracks Redesign: Team B.S. Server Episode 94

  • Published on

Episode 94 picks up on the barracks roof at Basket Castle, right where the last stream stopped. "I was working on the slower slope thing," and now it's back to that. The steep roof is gone, and the new one is meant to be gentler and to keep mobs from spawning on it.

A gentler roof

The dark oak roof goes in as rows of slabs with stairs between them. "If we don't like it we'll tear it all out." Near the top Basket leaves an opening for a skylight and fills it with glass panes. Slabs under the glass would let mobs spawn, so the next question is how to fix that, and a viewer suggests stairs at the same moment Basket thinks of it. "We think alike." With stairs in place the roof is "not spawnable," and light can still come through.

The back of the roof gives more trouble. Basket weighs building a plain wall there against starting the slope from that side too, which would put the skylight in the middle of the room. The middle wins. The roof gets torn up and rebuilt, rounded a little at the back, and a few slabs that made a spawnable spot turn back into stairs. "It's definitely not steep at all, but I think I like that better."

Rain and light

The skylight is open to the weather, so Basket adds a small drain in one corner with a slab and a stair, then tries an iron trapdoor and iron bars as a grate. The water would run into a secret space in the wall. No hole goes through the outside, since an opening there "would make that wall look weirder."

Next come holes in the floors, so daylight from the skylight reaches all the way down to the main hall and "you wouldn't have to burn lanterns constantly or torches." The bunk room, with bunk beds and chests planned, still leaves room to walk around. To copy the stair layout onto the floor above, Basket cheats a little by pulling out blocks to see the pattern from above, then puts the floor and torches back.

A wall along the cliff

With the barracks in good shape, Basket heads outside to an unfinished stretch of outer wall at the cliff edge. It goes up in plain stone brick for now, with cracked bricks to come later. The plan for this corner is a big crane that lifts cargo up from a road and storehouse below, "a way to bring stuff in without having to haul it through the front door." Some dirt gets reshaped to smooth the slope, and Basket decides the cliff is steep enough: "I think the castle is defended enough."

The walls are hollow, and the blocks still go fast. "Imagine if I made the walls solid." Torches go inside the wall so there are no "surprise creepers," and shulker boxes get raided for more stone brick.

The corner tower and the harbor

The wall turns toward a large corner tower with a three-wide door off a future road. For now the tower is a hollow shell, and a cave at its base stays open. The stone brick runs low, so Basket closes up one spot and takes a last look before ending.

The tour finishes at the water below. It is one of the harbors Basket has in mind, with docks, bigger boats offshore bringing cargo in on smaller ones, and the crane lifting it up into the castle. The main road runs around this side and may need a bridge section. The wall needs more stone before it can go any further. The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
