Basketopia City Planning: Team B.S. Server Episode 121

  • Published on

Episode 121 starts at the skeleton farm, where Basket has been collecting bone blocks "in preparation" for a project. The project is Basketopia itself. Only a few buildings stand in the city so far, and Basket wants to "blueprint out a lot of the other stuff": roads first, then the outlines of the buildings along them. Basket is the only player in the game; the in-game chat shows only Basket's own sleep and weather lines and the server's autosave messages.

Bone blocks and cobble

It's night when Basket gets back, so the first job is making it day. The plan is simple. Bone blocks mark the corners of future buildings, and cobblestone marks the roads. The cobble is nearly out, so Basket runs down to the bottom of the storage area, fills a shulker box, and swaps to the Fortune pickaxe to get more cobble while digging.

The main road through town is five wide. A side branch is four wide, "a less main road, it's still main road though," and it has to climb gradually toward the big gate. The smallest roads are three wide.

Alleys that don't line up

Most of the work is deciding where each building's corner goes. Basket wants alleyways between buildings, marked with slabs for now, but doesn't want them all to line up. "Being in some sort of medieval stuff I've seen, they don't always all line up."

Spacing matters because of overhangs. The upper floors of these buildings stick out over the street, so Basket sets some of them back from the side roads. If two overhangs faced each other across a narrow road, they would nearly touch.

The city wall comes into it too, even though its design isn't settled. Basket guesses it will be about five wide and marks out a gatehouse that sticks out a little from it. "Then the wall will continue all the way around the whole thing."

Along the way, Basket stops at the start of the flower shop and notices something about it. The next building over sits lower, so the two share a wall without getting in each other's way. "Wow, that's cool."

Four buildings in one block

One block of land gets counted out: thirteen spaces one way and twelve the other, not counting walls. Basket splits it into four buildings under one roof structure, a bigger one on the main road and smaller ones facing the side road. An upper floor could be a separate place, like an apartment, with its own door and stairs.

Two harbors and a crane

Then the road reaches a big bay. The plan had been a harbor somewhere else, but now Basket thinks both could be harbors. One might take larger ships, maybe with some of the cliff face moved for a deeper dock, and a four-wide road will run to it from the main road.

Near a tower, one building gets a small garden behind it, and Basket wonders if a secret way into the tower could start there. A four-wide utility road leads to the spot where the big crane will go, to bring supplies up, with an open yard for "piles of stuff." A spot behind another building might get a well, though there isn't much room, "unless it's just a cauldron in the ground."

A quarry, maybe outside the walls

Basket doesn't plan buildings right up against the castle, and leaves one side of the road until more of it is built. The city walls still need planning, and so does the field where the cows and donkeys are now, which will get more buildings. Last, Basket runs over to a stony area where the quarry will go, a big pit that should look worked. It might even end up outside the city walls. "Lots of plans, but we made some good planning today." The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
