Filtered Inserter, Episode 10: Factorio Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 10 picks up the freeplay factory after Episode 9's coal jams, with nothing in the research box. The edited-in card reads "Episode 10." This time Basket adds furnaces for copper and iron, researches Logistics and Engine, and finally gets filter inserters, which end up sorting coal, ammunition and spare parts into chests. By the end there is a small steel line and, in the commentary's words, "a big mess again."

More furnaces

The episode opens on changes made off camera. "I had a huge congestion of copper up here," so a second layer of furnaces now catches the copper first, with long arms moving the plates over to the main belt. It helps, but the commentary decides the real shortage is iron: "I think we just need more iron in general."

Basket gathers stone, crafts stone furnaces and burner inserters, and starts a new column of furnaces beside the iron field. Drills on the patch drop ore straight onto a belt that runs past them, coal comes along the same line, and a big chest at the end catches any surplus. Small electric poles bring power over, and after a stubborn stretch, "once I got past the coal, it worked out."

Logistics

While that goes up, research gets moving. Optics comes first ("oh lights, well that's convenient"), then Logistics, which brings the underground belt and the splitter. The splitter's info box reads "Splits incoming transport belts," and the commentary admits, "I don't really know what that means." The underground belt is easier to like: "Oh, that's a lot faster. That's a lot better." Bullet shooting speed 1 goes in next.

The filter inserter

Then the title item. "Do we have the faster inserters now? Oh we do, so we can do the filtered inserters." The first one replaces an ordinary inserter and moves only coal. "Holy cow. So this guy's gonna just move coal over."

Coal keeps piling up anyway. "I think I'm just producing too much coal," so one coal drill is shut off, and later a second once Basket spots "we have coal from up there too." A splitter goes down to try out, and an inserter is moved so that "now I have coal on the right, stuff to cook on the left." Partway through, the commentary notes "I got bad guys," then decides "we're fine." Another filter inserter pulls ammunition into its own chest, and gun turrets go up around the assemblers, "because this is kind of our good stuff."

At the end of the main belt, filter inserters now feed a row of iron chests, each set to one item: belts, copper cable, plates, gears and circuits. Bricks get no slot, since the commentary cannot find them in the filter list. A second belt doubles what reaches the row. Research moves on to Engine.

Steel

"Oh I need to do steel, that's probably an important thing." The crafting window shows Steel plate made from 5 iron plates, so Basket loads iron plates into furnaces on the iron line by hand and runs a belt to carry the output away. "We have a bunch of steel now." Engine finishes around the same time, and the research box goes back to "Press T to start a new research." One more filter inserter, set to coal, drops the spare coal into an iron chest.

Where it ends

"Now we have steel production. We have a big mess again." The coal problem is still there, and the commentary still cannot work out why so much coal ends up in one spot. "So I'll get this fixed up," and the episode ends over the furnaces and labs with nothing researching.
