BasketMC

Optimization, Episode 20: Factorio Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 20 is a tune-up of the factory from the last episode. Basket follows a slow line of chips back to its real cause, a shortage of copper, and builds a new copper smelter with electric furnaces. Then the power runs low, and the rest of the video goes into two new banks of boilers and steam engines and more pumps at the lake. By the end the power holds during the day, laser turrets are researched, and the coal-fired furnaces are next on the list.

Chasing the slow chips

The video opens with a change made since last time: blue chip production now runs on three assembling machines, "and they all have speed 2 to try and keep up." That leaves the red chips short, and the red chips turn out to be waiting on green chips. Following the chain back, the hold-up is the copper cables. Basket upgrades the cable assemblers, gives each one two speed modules, and swaps in faster belts. None of it helps much: "there's actually no copper running through here, so we're really just short on copper."

A copper smelter on electricity

At the copper mine to the south, a few idle drills get moved to better spots. Then Basket opens the research screen and starts Advanced material processing 2 for electric furnaces, "so we don't have to worry about coal."

After a cut, a new block of drills and a smelter are running, with "a bunch of electrical furnaces along here." Next to it, a row of chests acts as a buffer: inserters take copper off the belt into chests and put it straight back, "so if this ever gets backlogged, these chests will fill up." Part of the smelter is rebuilt with fast belts and fast inserters. The furnaces still seem slow, but the commentary decides "we are really keeping up."

Still short on red chips

Back at the chip lines, Basket opens Speed module 3 on the research screen, and the commentary reads it off: "it's gonna require speed 2 modules, oh, and alien artifacts." Every blue chip is going into speed modules, so no blue science is being made. Basket reroutes the red chip belt with a filter inserter and an underground belt, and lands on the plain answer: "we really just need to get more red chips being produced." That waits for more assemblers.

Power runs out

After another cut, the commentary explains: "I was having some power issues," even during the day. Basket lays a new row of boilers and steam engines off a water pipe, feeding coal with a filter inserter set to coal. The engines show low performance. At night the power screen shows the solar panels making nothing, and the demand bar is not full.

Meanwhile the research screen shows Automation 3 researched, and Laser turrets starts. A pump and an experiment with "three of these to three of these" help, so Basket builds a second, larger block of boilers and engines, with belts and splitters bringing coal to every row.

Laser turrets finishes ("we have laser turrets, sweet"), and by 39:30 the research screen shows Railway researched too. Coal comes up short on the new block, so a splitter takes coal from a neighboring belt. Then the water runs low, and more offshore pumps go in along the shore.

Where it ends

The electric network screen shows the power satisfied during the day: "during the day we're good to go." Laser turret damage 1 is researching, and Laser turret damage 2 starts just before the end. The last stop is the older furnace line, where a swap ran into trouble: "these are actually three wide and this is only two wide, so I couldn't do a direct replacement." The plan for next time is to "replace this whole network here" with electric furnaces, "get the coal out of this whole system," and add speed modules. The video ends there, in daylight.
