Season 2 of Factorio starts on a brand new map, streamed live. "Today we're gonna be playing my second playthrough of Factorio. So we'll see how my knowledge from before works to help." Over a little more than an hour, Basket goes from a single burner drill to self-fueling coal miners, belts of iron and copper, steam power from a small lake and a row of labs fed by assembling machines. When the stream ends, red science is being made by machines and the research queue is running.
A new map
The stream opens on the map generator. The commentary turns the resources up to "good" so they will not "run out as quickly," and makes water a bit more common: "there's times where I needed water but like water wasn't around very much."
The new world starts next to an iron patch, with coal and stone nearby. The first minutes are slow hand mining. "Wow, this is super slow." A burner drill goes down on iron with a stone furnace in front of it, then more drills, with chests catching the ore so nothing has to be mined by hand.
Coal that feeds itself
Coal comes next, and the commentary wants it to run without help. Burner drills and burner inserters on the coal patch are set up so the coal they dig also keeps them running. "This little system here we can use to output coal and then fuel itself." Later a whole row of drills is seeded by hand at the first one, and the coal it puts out fuels the next drill down the line.
Then the first belt. Burner drills on the iron patch put ore on one side and coal on the other, and the belt runs past a row of stone furnaces with burner inserters loading them. Getting the ore onto the right side takes some trial and error. "It puts on the inside, so we want on the outside belt."
With no splitters yet, the commentary asks, "There's no low-tech way of splitting conveyor belts, right?" and answers it a moment later with a pair of burner inserters moving coal from one belt to another. "Now, it's split, ta-da." The same belt is carried on to the copper patch, where another row of furnaces starts making copper plates.
Steam power from a small lake
For electricity, the commentary picks one of the small lakes near the base rather than walk to a bigger one. "I don't really know if it has to be a big lake for it to actually work right. We'll see." Trees are cleared, and a line of boilers and steam engines runs back from the water's edge, fed coal by another burner-inserter split. "And then in theory, that'll produce power. Actually, that wasn't too bad."
Power lines run up to the copper area, and the burner inserters there are swapped for electric ones. Along the way a viewer suggested control-left-click to empty a furnace without opening it. "Wow, so many clicks I get to save." Chests now collect the iron and copper plates, and when the furnaces back up, the commentary adds more chests as a buffer.
First research and first assemblers
A lab goes down, the first red science is crafted by hand, and the game reports "started research Automation." Once it is done, two assembling machines are placed: one making gears and one making red science, with a lab beside them.
It works, but slowly. "Yeah, so the bottleneck right now is not enough copper." More burner drills go onto the copper patch, and some inserters are turned around to put plates back on the belt instead of pulling them all off.
The last half hour is a proper science line. Two assemblers make gears and a column of assemblers makes red science onto a belt. Then the lab count grows to six in a row. The research screen shows Electronics researched, and the filter inserter in the crafting menu calls for a fast inserter. The commentary finds fast inserters in the research list, and soon a filter inserter is set to take only red science off the belt and send it to the labs.
Where it ends
The plan for the line, per the commentary, is red science on the far side of the belt and green science on the inside later. Green science is not being made yet. The last messages on screen are "started research Logistics 2" and "changed research from Logistics 2 to Automation 2." The stream ends over the six labs and the red science assemblers, with iron, copper, coal and stone mined automatically, steam power running and "red science and research and iron and copper and power in episode one."
