Plastic, Episode 6: Factorio Season 2

  • Published on

Episode 6 of Season 2 opens at night over the smelting block that Episode 5 rebuilt. Over half an hour, Basket adds another row of steam power, puts turrets around a small patch of oil, and builds a little oil setup that makes the first plastic and solid fuel. Then more labs go in, Flight gets researched, and the push toward drones runs into one more requirement. When the video ends, Battery is researching and the red chip assemblers are still being set up.

Walls and more power

Enemies are still coming from the north, so the wall gets longer there. "I'm out of wall." More turrets go in, fed by inserters, because "until I have drones I don't have an easy way to transport ammunition for turrets." The commentary checks the factory: "we have lots of good iron production," and copper is "doing good" too. Advanced electronics goes into research.

Power is "not good," so a new row of boilers and steam engines goes in by the lake, with a splitter to bring coal over. The commentary notes it sits on the copper ore and says "eventually I'll move these." Then: "Okay. So more power. Good."

Guarding the oil

Advanced electronics finishes. "I wanted to get towards flight. So I need advanced engines." Electric engine starts, and the next step is clear to the commentary: "We need to get oil. So we need to fortify the area." An old ammunition line gets turned around, and a row of turrets goes down by the oil, which the commentary says is "only two." "So, put down some turrets to defend our new, very important resource." Power poles run all the way out to it.

Plastic and solid fuel

Two oil pumps go down, then pipes and a refinery. "It's gonna output three things that I'll have to deal with." Sulfur processing goes into research. Plastic needs coal, and "coal's not by here at all," so a belt gets run down to a chemical plant set to plastic, with a chest at the end. "Ok good now we have plastic, however we have other stuff we need to get rid of."

There are no storage tanks yet, so another chemical plant turns the extra into solid fuel. "I can change this to be lubricant later on once I actually have tanks." The commentary sums it up: "So now we're producing plastic and the solid fuel from this tiny little area." Walls go around it afterward.

More labs

Back at the base, research is "just really slow." The fix is to extend the lab line. "Let's put in 14 more. We'll go the full 15." Building them "takes a lot of green chips," and the commentary expects it to hurt the power, but "it's keeping up, good." Sulfur processing finishes, and on the research screen: "I want to get to flight. Here's flight, oh, I can just do flight right now." A coal buffer and a spot for central storage chests go in while it runs.

Where it ends

The research screen shows Construction robotics as unavailable. "So I need steel, I need to make chips so red chips need to be happening." Assemblers for red chips go in next to the green chip line. They need plastic, which for now will come "manually from far away," plus copper cable and green chips. The copper line has stopped, and the commentary finds out why: "I'm putting stone in my copper line." That gets sorted out.

Flight finishes, and the research screen shows Battery. "I need batteries. Okay, so when I said we were almost there, I lied." Battery starts researching. The last line is "I'll still get this thing up and running, but we have a ways to go," and the video ends there.
