Engi Cruiser B, Run 3: Faster Than Light

  • Published on

The Engi Cruiser Type B goes out again on Normal, with Advanced Edition content enabled. The ship is The Vortex, with one Engi crew member, a Heavy Ion and a Heavy Laser I, an Anti-Personnel drone, two System Repair drones and the Drone Reactor Booster. Basket sets a goal at the start: "I want to get the third layout for this ship. So I need to get this ship to Sector 8." The run that counts reaches Sector 2, a Civilian Sector, where a Rebel Rigger destroys the ship.

Part 1: Two restarts and a new crew member

The first game, with Maxwell aboard, does not last. "Let's pretend this didn't happen," Basket says. "I'm just going to restart." The ship will not jump ("here's the bug where I can't jump"), and Basket has to go back to the hangar. Text edited into the video over the pause menu offers a different cause: "It was actually most likely because I had the game paused." A second game, crewed by Tach, meets an Auto-Hacker that goes after the weapons, and Basket starts over again. "Okay, let's try again."

The third game, with Mullett aboard, is the run. A Rebel Rigger with beam weapons is beaten first ("I think they tried to surrender and I guess I said no"), then a Pirate Interceptor chasing a civilian ship sends a boarder, and Basket shuts the doors to starve the room of air. "They didn't even give us anything at all." A Pirate Outrider demands a crew member, and Basket refuses: "Can you imagine having to give them our only crew member?" The pirates surrender and offer one of their captives, and Valeriya joins the crew. "Now we have another crew."

Basket hires a Pirate Scout mercenary to delay the Rebels for 17 scrap, fights off another Pirate Scout, and finds a ship crippled by pirates selling its equipment. Basket sells a System Repair Drone and buys a Burst Laser I, passing on the Chain Ion. A Rebel Fighter tries to jump away and warn the fleet, but breaks apart first. After a Pirate Interceptor in an asteroid field, Basket leaves an Auto-Surveyor alone ("Let's try and avoid the ship") and heads for the exit.

Part 2: Sector 2

The sector map offers the Uncharted Nebula or a Civilian Sector. Basket picks the Civilian Sector, hoping for "more friendly sectors, civilians, instead of a lot of bad guys." An Auto-Assault at the first beacon starts with no shields up, then raises them, and Basket gets through the fight. A heavily damaged Federation ship is said to be hiding in a nebula, but the search turns up nothing.

Then a Rebel Rigger with a combat drone, shields and a missile. The shields go down and stay down. "I'm having some problems with things not being repaired," Basket says. The hull drops to critical. "Stop killin' me!"

How it ended

The Vortex breaks apart in Sector 2 with Mullett and Valeriya aboard. The game-over screen reads "One last explosion marks your fate as your ship is torn apart," with a score of 496. The video returns to the hangar before its end cards.
