Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 11: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 11 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race opens with its title card over a small rocket lifting off with Hanvan Kerman aboard. Orbit IV takes Lemgas Kerman high above Kerbin with a science lab on board, and the lab runs out of power. A rebuilt version with photocells and extra parachutes carries Bill Kerman and comes down in the Grasslands. When the video stops, the science stands at 35 and Lemgas is still out on the first flight.

Straight up

In the VAB the name field reads Orbit IV. "Oh, I didn't realize I put it on all sides. That's right. We can have lots of ladders." The plan is simple: "We'll just try and shoot straight up and see what that does." Lemgas Kerman is aboard. Out of the atmosphere Basket cuts the engines and drops the empty stages. "So we have a really weird arc, it's still going to go down."

A lab with no power

The materials bay reports that "the high radiation environment caused a few of the samples to glow. It looks like it would be fun to paint the rocket with this." Basket sends the data to the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 for a better transmit value. The analysis starts creeping up, then the game reports "Not enough ElectricCharge" to process it. "I have one little solar panel and it's in the sun but obviously that's not enough." Basket leaves Orbit IV on its arc and heads back to the Space Center: "I'll have to remember to come back to that guy so he doesn't crash and die."

Bill flies alone

Back in the VAB: "I added a whole bunch of photocells," along with batteries "and some extra parachutes." Bill Kerman is the only one aboard. "I didn't equip this guy with a bunch of people, so it's just Bill. So the lab isn't going to even work anyway." The rocket leans off course on the way up ("I'm pretty sure that's not what I wanted it to do"), and the dropped stages tumble past: "Is this thing going to run into me? Don't hurt Bill." On the map Orbit II is still circling Kerbin, but switching to it does not work from here: "while they're in the atmosphere you can't switch away from them I guess."

Down in the Grasslands

The parachutes open and the pod settles, then rolls onto its side. "This is probably the Highlands again. So probably, oh, actually, Grasslands." Basket observes the Mystery Goo and checks the crew report: "Yeah, no science here." The game's Science Summary calls the flight Orbit V, with 0.8 science from the materials study.

Where it ends

The total reads Science: 35. A "To be continued..." card runs over the Space Center, and the end card wishes Gopherboy, Scoti Garbidis, Pikerize, Sayulily and Steel Douglas good luck. Orbit IV, with Lemgas Kerman aboard, is never revisited before the video ends. Orbit II is still in orbit around Kerbin.
