Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 12: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 12 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race juggles three craft. Orbit IV, with Lemgas Kerman aboard, is already in flight when the video opens and heading back down. Basket hires three new kerbals, launches them in Orbit V, and ends up in orbit around Kerbin almost by accident. Then Jebediah Kerman finally comes home from Orbit II. By the end Orbit V is the only craft left in orbit and the science stands at 63.

New faces

"I don't really want to send out Bill or Bob on a forever mission." In the Astronaut Complex Basket hires Sondred Kerman, Kelfrey Kerman and Caldous Kerman, and the crew screen puts Sondred in the Command Pod Mk1 and the other two in the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2. The VAB name field reads Orbit V.

Two craft at once

Orbit V lifts off on solid boosters and climbs while Orbit IV falls. Basket tries to switch between them and finds the game will not allow it while one is coming down through the atmosphere. "That's kind of a flaw." Orbit IV burns its way in over the mountains. "I had deployed the parachutes early," Basket says, and it drifts down under them over hilly ground.

Orbit by accident

Back on Orbit V, every maneuver node Basket drags out reads "Burn N/A." "I don't know what that means." One node shows an escape from Kerbin, and Basket takes it anyway: "What's the worst that can happen, these guys will get stranded, that's fine." The burn runs until the fuel is gone. Then the map shows something else. "Oh, I'm actually just in an orbit around Kerbin. Well, neat."

The science out here is thin. The crew report is "nothing good," the Mystery Goo says "The Goo feels right at home here," and the temperature reading is out of reach: "Can't do the temperature right now." The lab processes the Materials Study, and a message reports the analysis complete with the transmission value raised to 30%. Orbit V stays where it is.

Jebediah comes home

Orbit IV turns out to be somewhere already visited, Kerbin's Highlands. "I think I just lost some science." Basket recovers it anyway ("these guys are alive, good job guys") for 0.4 science and a total of 36.

Then the Tracking Station shows two craft orbiting Kerbin, Orbit II and Orbit V. Jebediah has "done enough trips around," so Basket burns Orbit II down, aiming for the south pole, and lands it in the dark. The Science Summary for Orbit II lists seven experiments, including the EVA report, the temperature scan and the recovery from Kerbin orbit, for 27.3 science and a total of 63.

Where it ends

"We have one thing stuck in orbit." Orbit V and its three new kerbals are still circling Kerbin, and Basket plans to add more fuel to the rockets to get even higher next time. The end card follows over the Space Center.
