Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 13: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 13 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race is three launches of one big rocket, each changed a little after the last. Orbit VI comes apart and lands on a roof at the Space Center. Orbit VII is too top-heavy. Orbit VIII flies twice and splashes down off the coast. Before the video ends Basket checks on Orbit V, still in orbit with Sondred Kerman, and the science stands at 55.

Orbit VI

"I've added even more of these guys on here," Basket says of the ring of tanks around the core. "This thing is still gigantic." The crew screen puts Anton Kerman in the Command Pod Mk1 and Matgan Kerman and Lemgas Kerman in the lab. "Jebediah, you can take the night off."

On the roof

The rocket does not get far. It breaks up low over the Space Center, and Basket blames the reaction wheel. The pod comes down under parachutes and settles on top of a building. "Alright, I landed on the building. Maybe this is a whole new biome." The experiments read "from KSC." Anton climbs out onto the ladder ("How cool. I have a ladder") and takes a surface sample: "Oh, that's worth something."

Orbit VII

The reaction wheel comes off and the craft is saved as Orbit VII. It tips over soon after liftoff. "Yeah, it's too top-heavy." Basket wonders whether there is "too much thrust in the beginning," lets the pod land on the grass near the shore and runs the experiments again for "little tiny smidges" of science.

Orbit VIII

Basket makes the rocket shorter and calls it Orbit VIII. The first flight lights every engine at once ("This might just be overkill") and is left to come down off camera: "I thought more rockets was better. Possibly not." The second time Basket launches the same design and leaves it alone. Something gets knocked off on the way up ("I have a decoupler in the wrong spot"), but this one climbs far above the coastline before it falls back and splashes down off Kerbin's Shores.

Science from the shore

"Actually that failed mission wasn't too bad." Anton's surface sample from Kerbin's Shores is worth 12.0 science (Science: 44) and the rest of Orbit VIII another 10.9, for a total of 55.

Checking on Orbit V

The Tracking Station lists Orbit V as orbiting Kerbin, with Sondred Kerman aboard. Basket runs the lab's analysis on a Mystery Goo observation "while in space high over Kerbin" and transmits it. "It worked! We got zero science!" The crew report is no better: "Nothing."

Where it ends

Basket leaves Orbit V in orbit and goes back to the Space Center: "Let's go back to the drawing board." A "To be continued..." card follows, and the end card wishes Gopherboy, Scoti Garbidis, Pikerize, Sayulily and Steel Douglas good luck. Still no Mun attempt.
