Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 14: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 14 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race is one long flight. Basket strips the rocket back, straps fuel tanks to its sides, and sends Anton Kerman up in Orbit IX. It wobbles, it climbs, and it makes orbit with fuel to spare. The video stops seconds before a burn that Basket hopes will reach the Mun.

Back to the drawing board

"There's a lot of problems with all the craziness I have going on here." In the VAB Basket pulls most of the old design apart and attaches four stacks of tanks and engines around the core, with nose cones on top. The name field still reads Orbit VIII. "That's eight, so I want to do IX." Basket also wants a pilot who is not Jebediah: "This is dangerous stuff. I want you to stick around." The crew screen puts a check next to Anton Kerman.

Struts

The first trip to the launch pad does not go well. "As you can tell, I haven't even launched yet, and it's not very stable." Basket recovers the vessel and adds struts between the stacks, then a few more "just to be on the safe side." The second time on the pad it is "still a little wobbly, but it's a little better." Then: "Three, two, one, cross your fingers, go!"

Up on the side tanks

Orbit IX climbs slowly. "I guess there's a lot of weight on this." At 10,000 meters Basket starts the turn and the side stacks drop away. Out of the atmosphere the engines cut, and Basket throttles back up for more height.

The maneuver node will not cooperate at first ("Why aren't you working?"), so Basket hops out to the Space Center and back into the flight. Then comes a burn of about a minute. "I like this, this is a decent design. It's a little slightly unstable to start, but it worked out." The orbit is "a little bit wonky," but there is "a bunch of fuel actually" left in the tanks.

Aiming for the Mun

With fuel left over, Basket looks at the Mun. The first node shows an escape from Kerbin. "I want to try and hook up with the Mun encounter." Basket drags out a new node and the planned path stretches out toward the Mun's orbit. The game reads 826.7 m/s for it, with the burn time still "N/A."

Basket waits out the clock, nudging the craft onto the blue marker. "It's not very maneuverable, this guy." With seconds to go: "Anton, yeah, you have a name now because you succeeded."

Where it ends

The countdown reaches the last seconds, and a "To be continued..." card comes up before the burn starts. Orbit IX and Anton Kerman are in orbit around Kerbin with the Mun burn still ahead. The end card follows over the Space Center.
