Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 24: Kerbal Space Program

Episode 24 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race brings Bill Kerman's Mun Lander III down onto the Mun. It comes down slowly, tips over on touchdown and stays in one piece. Bill gets out, plants a flag and gathers science. Basket says the lander has no engine left to get off the Mun, so Bill stays there when the video ends.

Bill's turn

The video opens on Bill Kerman's Mun Lander III close above the Mun. "Let's see if we can land it." "So Bill, you are our first attempt, we'll see if this will work." Basket burns to slow the ship down, and the map soon shows its path running into the surface. "We're actually intersecting now, so I need to, I guess, go with it."

A slower way down

Basket keeps the speed down this time. "Anytime this gets above 200, at least, I might start to slow myself down, because that snuck up on me pretty quick last time." The landing legs go down early, and most of the next ten minutes is a balance between fuel and speed. At one point Basket learns that the bottom gauge is the atmosphere reading, not the height, and slows down hard. Later the ship slows too much and starts climbing. "I was too efficient with my slowing down."

Near the end the fuel is almost gone. "I clearly won't be able to get back. That's for sure. But at least we can land."

Touchdown

The lander touches down at about 20 m/s. Something at its base flashes and bursts, and the ship tips over onto its side. "Don't blow up, you're okay." The navball reads 0.0 m/s. "So I don't have an engine, so obviously I won't get out... but we did land, we landed."

Science and a flag

Basket starts on the science before trying an EVA. The game names the spot the Mun's Midlands. A Mystery Goo reading, a surface sample ("The darker midlands surface appears to be made up of basaltic rocks.") and an EVA report go through the lab or get sent home. "Sorry Bill, you're currently stranded."

Then Bill climbs out. The flag goes in next to the lander with the site name "First Mun Landing." Basket calls it a "backwards flag," since its lettering faces the wrong way. Bill climbs back aboard.

Where it ends

"Bill you can just hang out here for now and hopefully we'll send some rescue for you." Back at the Space Center, Research and Development shows 186 science. Basket plans to work out a rocket with enough fuel "to be able to land on the Mun and then get back successfully." Bill and the lander stay on the Mun. Nobody has made it home from the Mun yet.
