Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 25: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 25 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race is a night of test launches at the Kerbal Space Center. Basket is after a lander with enough fuel to reach the Mun, land and come back. Three rockets leave the pad. None of them gets far, and the Astronaut Complex has to hire new kerbals along the way.

Mun Lander IV

The video opens in the Vehicle Assembly Building on the Mun Lander IV. "This will get us to the Mun with a little bit of extra fuel." It has another tank on the part that lands, engines moved to the sides and an extended ladder. Basket keeps Bob Kerman out of the pod, "because Bob is going to be on the actual mission," and Lemgas Kerman flies the test.

The rocket lifts off at night, but the staging goes wrong and the side engines stay stuck to the ship. "These guys are totally stuck to the engines." The parachutes bring the whole heavy bundle down, it bursts on landing, and the capsule comes through. "Oh, he survived, look at that." Basket recovers it.

Mun Lander V

Next comes the Mun Lander V, with tall solid rocket boosters strapped to the outside. "It's actually putting one of them inside, so that might just be a big disaster." It is. The rocket goes up in flames just off the pad, and the Flight Results window reads "Catastrophic Failure!" Afterward Lemgas Kerman is gone from the available crew list. "We lost a guy, that's right."

New hires

Plan B drops the boosters and goes back to the design that mostly worked. First the Astronaut Complex needs people. Basket hires Ronton Kerman, then Hersey Kerman, picked "based on names."

The third flight

This time Bob Kerman is in the pod. The launch is shaky at first but settles down, and the big stages drop away. Then the navball starts to wander. "Oh, I don't have SAS on. I could have sworn I had SAS on." Basket cuts the engines to try again later. The capsule comes down under parachutes, but over water. "Something I forgot about is that I can't land in the water with this ship."

It splashes down in a burst of spray. "Bob's fine, but I think we just lost the other guys." Ronton and Hersey are no longer on the available list.

Where it ends

Basket hires Sheplie Kerman and heads back to the VAB to rework the ship "so that it will actually land in the water okay without losing crew." The Mun Lander V is on screen when "To be continued..." comes up. The video does not go back to Bill Kerman, left on the Mun last episode, and nobody has made it home from the Mun yet.
