Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 26: Kerbal Space Program

Episode 26 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race launches a new design, the Mun Lander VI, with Bob Kerman as its only crew. It reaches orbit around Kerbin, survives a bang during the burn toward the Mun, and spends the rest of the video fine-tuning the approach. When it stops, Bob is closing on the Mun with a landing burn still ahead.

Mun Lander VI

The video opens in the editor on a new rocket. Basket has taken off the science part from the last design: "I don't think it's really necessarily worth it, especially with two crew." A decoupler means only the top section comes back. "So my crew to the moon will actually just be one person, Bob." The crew screen puts Bob Kerman in the Command Pod Mk1.

The launch goes smoothly. "This is much more stable than the last thing I was doing." After a 1 minute 22 second burn, "we just hit an orbit," and the map shows the Mun Lander VI circling Kerbin.

A bang on the way out

The next burn is meant to set up a Mun encounter. Partway through, the first engines run dry and Basket switches to the next set. "Explosion. I wonder what just happened." The burn finishes, but the encounter isn't there yet, and something is missing. Basket looks the ship over. "We still have the ladder, I think we still have everything. We have all four legs."

Chasing the encounter

An eight-second correction burn comes next, then a long wait. The encounter doesn't show on the map at first, then it does: "Oh there we go." Basket slows the ship near the descending node to bring the meeting with the Mun closer, then makes a two-second burn. "So now we have a Mun encounter." What the map shows after that is harder to read. "I'm not sure what the orange dot is telling me."

Aiming to land

After more time warp, the map shows the new path. "Our new path is actually intersecting with the Mun, interesting." Basket has always tried for an orbit first. This time the plan is different: "What I want is a big, big sharp V to land." The navball shows a 21-second burn about 12 minutes away, to slow the ship down for the landing.

Where it ends

Basket steps the time warp down as the burn gets close. "Just so I don't miss it I'm gonna go a little bit slower." "To be continued..." comes up before the burn. Bob and the Mun Lander VI are still on their way in, and nobody has made it to the Mun and back yet.
