Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 29: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 29 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race starts with two more failed pad tests, then gets a new lander into space at last. The Mun Lander XI reaches orbit with Hersey Kerman aboard and burns toward the Mun. Basket also starts on the job of bringing Jebediah Kerman home from orbit around the Mun. When the video ends, both flights are still underway.

Mun Lander X

The video opens in the VAB with solid fuel boosters strapped to the sides of the lander. "They do still stick down a little bit, so we'll see how that works." The new version is saved as the Mun Lander X. The first launch has the boosters on the wrong stage, so Basket recovers the vessel and moves them. "What an episode of failed launches. But I guess this is what happens for science."

The second try with Doodred Kerman fares no better. "These things aren't strong enough." The rocket comes apart over the pad. "Evacuate!"

Mun Lander XI

Back in the VAB, the side boosters come off. "Trying to add on more engines to the sides doesn't seem to really be working." Hersey Kerman takes the seat in the Mun Lander XI. This one wobbles on the way up, but Basket steers it back to straight up and thinks the gravity turn went better than normal. Near the end of the burn to orbit: "Those engines are almost out. So that's still better than last time." It ends up in a low orbit around Kerbin.

Off toward the Mun

Basket fiddles with a maneuver node until the map shows a Mun encounter about two hours out. The burn takes about 40 seconds and runs into the next stage. Afterward Basket checks the legs. "I'm hoping that we don't blow up like we did."

The Tracking Station lists the Mun Lander XI as "On escape trajectory out of Kerbin," along with Orbit V, the craft and flags at the Mun, and a Mun Lander III orbiting the Mun.

Bringing Jebediah home

That Mun Lander III has Jebediah Kerman aboard. Basket tries to set Kerbin as the target and can't. "I'm still trying to figure out some of these controls." A maneuver node does the job instead, with the burn about an hour away, sooner than the Mun Lander XI's encounter. "So Jebediah, you're going to be coming home."

First comes the science. The Mystery Goo reads "The Goo seems to be less dense here," and the crew report suggests the inside of the craters might be the best place to land. Jebediah climbs out for an EVA report beside the capsule.

Where it ends

"To be continued..." comes up with the Mun Lander III still circling the Mun and its burn home still ahead. The Mun Lander XI is on its way out from Kerbin. Nobody has made it to the Mun and back yet.
