Basket I to XII, Season 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Season 2 of Kerbal Space Program on the channel is a shared multiplayer save on a server run by GopherCraft, with the DMP multiplayer mod. It opens with twelve short clips, Basket I to XII, each named for the craft built and flown in it. The commentary calls it a fresh start in the mode that is not career, a chance to remember how the game works and to fail a lot along the way. Nothing reaches orbit in these twelve. The heat shield arrives halfway through, several flights end with a kerbal killed on re-entry, and the last clip ends with Basket XII in the sea and a plan to put the wings back on.

Basket I: Science on the launch pad

Basket I is a command pod with a Mystery Goo canister, and the name is in Roman numerals "because we're cool." The first launch never leaves the pad. Joebles Kerman files a crew report, climbs out on EVA, plants a flag and takes a surface sample, and the goo gets observed. The Mission Summary for Basket I lists Joebles Kerman, "Ready for next assignment." The science goes into the first rocketry node of the research tree.

For the second launch Joebles walks off the pad looking for fresh ground to sample. The game keeps calling the grass the launch pad until Joebles crosses a seam in it, and the new report counts. Nobody else is on the server yet.

Basket II: Catastrophic failure, then a landing

Basket II adds solid fuel boosters, a Science Jr., wings, a decoupler and a parachute. The first launch goes up crooked and comes straight back down. The Flight Results read "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!" with a highest altitude of 971m, and Joebles Kerman was killed.

Basket goes back and flies it again with SAS on, after a viewer's reminder to press T. This time it climbs steadily, starts to spin when the booster drops, and comes down under its parachutes close to the Space Center with Magvy Kerman in the pod. "Okay, I landed. I didn't die." The goo, the Science Jr. and a crew report all go into the bank.

Basket III: A maneuver node and no heat shield

Basket III gets three radial decouplers with solid boosters on them. It climbs high enough for Basket to open the map, add a first maneuver node and learn that the blue marker is the node ("well, that would have been a mistake"). The burn runs out of fuel short of orbit, but the craft has gone a long way: the Flight Results later show a highest altitude of 358,535m, and Magvy Kerman goes on EVA for a report up there.

There is no heat shield on it. On the way home the capsule glows, breaks up in a fireball over the ocean, and the Flight Results list Magvy Kerman as killed.

Basket IV: Out of electric charge

Basket IV is meant to fly lower and reach orbit, with a decoupler under the capsule so everything else can be dropped. The boosters push it off course, and the maneuver node asks for more burn than the tanks hold. Transmitting science drains the electric charge, the controls stop answering, and the commentary learns that firing the engine charges it back up: "Well, that's handy."

Re-entry is steep. The parachutes go out while still marked yellow, the capsule hits the ground, and the Flight Results list Raysy Kerman as killed after a highest altitude of 155,626m.

Basket V: Fewer solid rockets

Basket V is the shortest clip. A viewer asks for the solid rockets to come off, so they come off, and the staging gets fixed so it stops needing a fix before every launch. The craft climbs a little and comes down under its parachute on land instead of the hoped-for ocean. Sigemy Kerman files a crew report and an EVA report before recovery. The viewer's real idea, read out afterward, was a liquid fuel stage on top of a solid booster.

Basket VI: Splashdown

Basket VI puts wings on its solid boosters ("I like wings, these are cool"). It flies straight, then flips, and a viewer points out that it is top-heavy. Orbit is out of reach, so the goal becomes a parachute landing in the ocean, and it works. The pod settles on the sea, and the crew observes the goo, files crew and EVA reports from the water and takes a surface sample. "Yes, the ocean exists."

With the new science Basket picks the survivability research for the heat shield. "That'll be the end of the stream," and the clip signs off there.

Basket VII: The heat shield goes on

Basket VII opens with the heat shield already researched, and the commentary mentions hints from "yesterday." The capsule gets a heat shield underneath, the Science Jr. goes back on, and parts move inside a service bay. On the first launch a stray press of the spacebar fires the next stage too early. The parachute and antenna are lost, the pod comes down hard, and the Flight Results show 22,829m as the highest point.

The second launch flips over again, but the parachute opens this time and the pod lands for recovery. "Not enough weight on the bottom," the commentary reads out.

Basket VIII: Center of mass

Basket VIII turns on the center of mass marker in the VAB and drops some fuel tanks to move it lower. It still somersaults as soon as the first stage goes: "less fuel might be even worse now I think about it." It climbs high enough for a Materials Bay observation, then comes down on what the science window calls Kerbin's Shores, where Magvy Kerman takes a surface sample and an EVA report. The science goes on battery packs and a thermometer in the research tree.

Basket IX: The heat shield works, once

Basket IX adds thermometers and moves four wings to the bottom of the rocket. The first launch stops spinning ("I'm gonna guess it's actually having those wings lower"). It still cannot make orbit, but it records a temperature scan from Kerbin's upper atmosphere, and on the way down the heat shield takes the flames. "Yay, heat shield!" After a moment upside down the pod lands and is recovered.

The second launch tilts over earlier, and a viewer points out the button that locks the craft onto retrograde. The fins, the Science Jr. and the command pod overheat on re-entry anyway, and the Flight Results list Magvy Kerman as killed after a highest altitude of 167,814m. "I don't know why it overheated there."

Basket X: Holding the maneuver

Basket X carries more fuel in the upper stage. It leans the wrong way off the pad and only straightens out as it climbs. Basket finds the SAS button that holds the maneuver ("that makes life so much easier"), counts down the burn with a finger off the spacebar, and runs the tanks dry.

On re-entry the capsule overheats, and the Flight Results list Raysy Kerman as killed after reaching 99,800m. The same list also logs Joebles Kerman as killed partway through the flight, and nothing on screen explains it. The commentary's conclusion is more electric charge: "Batteries, let's do it."

Basket XI: "I built the ICBM"

Basket XI starts with batteries. A viewer suggests liquid fuel on the outer rockets, so after a stop in the research tree for bigger liquid fuel tanks, three outer tanks go on with engines and nose cones around the solid booster in the middle. The result is very long. It holds together off the pad ("I can't believe this thing is holding together") and then flies almost sideways.

The parachute does not survive: "Chute destroyed by aero forces and heat." The capsule with Sigemy Kerman falls into the sea. "Yeah, I built the ICBM."

Basket XII: One more try

Basket XII is shorter, with four side boosters, lots of solid fuel and nose cones, "probably the last ship of the stream." It lifts off better but with a slow spin. When the boosters drop, one blows up beside the rocket, and the craft tumbles when Basket tries to angle it. The parachute is destroyed by aero forces and heat again, and the capsule with Valentina Kerman drops into the water.

The lesson for next time is the wings: "before when I had wings it seems like it helps."

Where it ends

Basket XII is the last ship of these clips. No Basket has reached orbit, and the research tree now holds the heat shield, batteries and bigger liquid fuel tanks. The next video goes on with Basket XIII.
