Christopher "Kerbal" Walken, Season 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

This Season 2 upload runs almost seven hours, and nearly all of it is kerbals walking on the Mun. An edited-in card calls it "Walking to the Bus Stop," and a second card spells it out: "The following video is of 3 stranded kerbals walking to the 'Space Bus'." The recording has music and no commentary. Its description gives the same date as Space Bus to the Rescue, but it does not repeat any of that video: it picks up after Space Bus 3 is already standing on the Mun. Jebediah Kerman walks in first and plants a flag, then two more kerbals cross about 11 kilometers from a ship lying on its side, and by the end all three have reached Space Bus 3.

Jebediah's walk

The video opens behind a kerbal already on the move across flat gray ground, with markers on the horizon for Space Bus 3 and The Success Crater XLT. For the next hour and a half the view hardly changes. The kerbal walks, the navball sits at the bottom of the screen, and the distance to Space Bus 3 counts down: 4.6 km half an hour in, under 2 km after an hour.

About an hour and a half in, Space Bus 3 rises over the horizon as a dark shape on four legs. The kerbal walks up under it, and a right-click menu gives the name: Jebediah Kerman. The menu offers a surface sample and EVA reports, and then Jebediah plants a flag beside the lander. The site name typed into the flag starts "The Success C," and from here on the other walkers have a marker called The Success Crater Bus Stop to aim for.

The second walker

Right after the flag goes in, the view switches to a ship lying on its side somewhere else on the Mun, and a second kerbal sets off from it. The markers read The Success Crater Bus Stop at 10.9 km and The Success Crater XLT at 4.8 km. The screen never names this kerbal.

About ten minutes out, the ground drops away. The kerbal tips over and tumbles down the slope, rolling several times before it stops, gets back on its feet and carries on.

That fall is the biggest event for a long while. The rest of this leg is two and a half hours of gray ground and a shrinking marker, until Space Bus 3 finally shows up ahead again. A little over four hours and sixteen minutes into the video, the second kerbal reaches the lander and stops next to Jebediah and the flag.

The last walk

The view goes straight back to the ship on its side, and the third kerbal starts the same trip of nearly 11 kilometers. This one takes a fall early on too, sliding and rolling down a slope before standing up again. The ground gets darker as the walk goes on, and for much of the last two hours the kerbal is a small dark figure on dark ground, following the marker for The Success Crater Bus Stop. A few minutes before the end, Space Bus 3 appears out of the gloom and the kerbal walks in under its legs.

Where it ends

The camera swings up over Space Bus 3 standing on the Mun, with the kerbals gathered in its shadow, and the video cuts to the end cards. Nobody climbs aboard on screen and the bus does not take off, so the rescue is still not finished. Space Bus 3 is parked at The Success Crater Bus Stop with the walkers beside it.
