Mun Rescue?, Season 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

This Season 2 stream on GopherCraft's multiplayer server goes straight back to the job the last one left unfinished: landing next to Jebediah Kerman on the Mun. The first try is The Success 2011 XLT again, and its little landing engine cannot slow it down in time. A rebuild with a bigger engine, The Success 2012 XLT, crashes too, though its command pod comes through in one piece. The recording then jumps to a third ship already in orbit around the Mun. It lands upright, tips over on a slope, and spends the rest of the stream doing science in a crater it names The Success Crater.

Same ship, second try

"We're going to redo the mission that I screwed up last time." The load list in the Vehicle Assembly Building goes up to The Success 2011 XLT, and the commentary keeps it as it was: landing legs, solar panels, plenty of batteries, the Hitchhiker container for passengers and a lab. Magvy Kerman (Pilot) and Aldberry Kerman (Engineer) take the pod, Natalin Kerman (Scientist) takes the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2, and the Hitchhiker seats stay empty for whoever gets picked up.

The spacebar is on everyone's mind after last time. "I'm not going to hit spacebar at a stupid time." The commentary looks through the controls settings for a way to rebind it, does not find one, and asks the viewers, who do not know either.

The launch is wobbly, but the ship reaches orbit with fuel to spare and burns for the Mun, collecting crew reports and goo results along the way. In orbit there, Basket switches over to The Success 2008 XLT. The portrait in the corner is Jebediah Kerman, still waiting.

The little engine that couldn't

The plan is to kill most of the speed with the big engine, drop it, and land on a small engine underneath. The drop goes fine ("spacebar, that's intentional"), but the small engine barely slows the ship. "Lesson learned: the little tiny engine I have on the bottom is too little." The ship hits the ground in a ball of fire. "Perfect except for the little engine that couldn't."

A bigger engine and wider legs

Back in the Vehicle Assembly Building, the tiny engine gives way to the RE-L10 "Poodle" Liquid Fuel Engine. "So the one I was using was 60. This one has up to 250." To keep the legs clear of it, a viewer suggests brackets. There is no part by that name, so the legs go out on Modular Girder Segments, with EAS-4 Strut Connectors to hold everything together. The ship is saved as The Success 2012 XLT, with Urene Kerman (Pilot) and Barchel Kerman (Engineer) in the pod and Corzer Kerman (Scientist) in the lab.

Down too fast, again

The second flight follows the first: a wobbly climb, orbit, the burn to the Mun. This time the lab gets busy on the way, with messages like "Lab Analysis on EVA Report while in space high over the Mun Complete," and a batch of science goes home by antenna. A viewer suggests aiming a little ahead of the crater, since the Mun turns underneath the ship on the way down.

The plan is to start braking at 15,000 meters. It is not enough. "We're still gonna crash. I should have done this sooner, I guess." The ship comes apart in an explosion, but the command pod survives and rolls to a stop on its side, with Urene and Barchel still showing in the portraits. A marker on the horizon puts The Success 2008 XLT 18.2 km away. According to the commentary, the scientist in the lab did not make it.

"Well, on the bright side, now is even more of a party." Back at the Space Center the science counter reads 1076.1, and the Astronaut Complex lists Magvy, Aldberry and Natalin among the kerbals available for the next mission.

A third ship tips over

The recording picks up again with a ship already in orbit around the Mun, Magvy and Aldberry in the portraits and the lab running. "I came back here with a ship off camera." The commentary counts it as about the fifth time "basically the same ship" has gone to help out Jeb.

The approach waits for sunlight on Jeb's crater, then the engine cuts out partway through the burn ("Oh, my engine stopped"), and a short correction gets the ship falling toward the landing area. This descent is slower. The big engine stays on as long as it can, gets dropped a few kilometers up, and the small engine eases the ship down while Basket watches the shadow to judge the height.

It touches down standing up. Then it keeps going over. "I feel like I was going slow enough. I guess I'm kind of on a slope." The ship ends up lying on its side.

Science in The Success Crater

The lab still works, and so do the solar panels. "Lab Analysis on Crew Report from the Mun's Midlands Complete (28 data stored)." Magvy climbs out for an EVA report and a surface sample, then plants a flag and names the spot The Success Crater. "This is where all my success missions end up."

With time warp running, the lab fills up and transmits again and again. One message reads "[Research & Development]: Received science lab research data from The Success 2012 XLT. 499 Science added." The commentary's plan for next time is a different kind of ship: "next ship I do, it'll be more for rescue, less for science."

Where it ends

The commentary counts "six guys stranded in Success Crater" now, plus Jeb in The Success 2008 XLT. On the way back to the Space Center the screen goes to loading, and the commentary says, "I think my game crashed." The stream ends there.
